I know a man who is the best catfisherman I've ever seen. He does not want to catch small ones. He uses 14# circle hooks only!!!! Fishes mostly for Bluecat.....some yellowcat. I only use 12/0 with a 3' 200lbs mono leader. You wouldn't believe how many little channels will eat a 4-6" perch/shad on a 12/0 sea circle! -Poo

I have been using bottom dweller 9/0. I bought some of those and used em a few times before I gave em away. Hook points bent and broke off too easily for me. Went back to 8/0 gamas.

I have a mix of 5/0 and 9/0 out and the way I look at it is it ain't the hook the the bait, dept, pressure and time of year. sometimes I can't catch a fish to save my life on shad then use minnows and start catching the 20lbers. I think bait and the other stuff come more into effect before I worry about hook size.

No need to downsize here..6 & 8's all the way..I use circle hooks and have no problems hooking small or larger baits and catch just as many fish as I did useing 5's. Ive found that big blues will straighten hooks more with smaller hooks. Ive recently purchased some saltwater circles with thicker shafts to try to limit the number of straightened hooks on my lines.

I downsized from 8/0 catmaxx to 8/0 gamas LOL. I am like Tom, 8/0 only for me and up to 10/0 during winter. I don't want to catch small fish. A 9 in cat can still get hooked on an 8/0 hook unfortunatly. Tom turned me onto the 8# catt maxx and thats all I been using! Saved me from spending moneys on more expensive hooks! Gots some 9# for cold water fishin!
