I have heard that a bass will darken up like that when they are hanging out in shaded, dark areas. Like for instance thick grass, pads, or docks. I have never seen one that dark though, very cool.

The pigmentation of the bass is determined by the water they are in. However, its done through their vision. The photo receptors within their eyes constantly adjust their body coloration based purely on the water conditions. When you have a fish that has gone totally black, nine times out of ten he has gone blind. It is much more common in the "sunfish" world with bluegill, coppernose, etc. What's really awkward is when one side of the fish is black and the other side has normal, distinct coloration. That is an indiciation that they are blind in one eye.

This happens a lot of time when the fish has been sitting real high up in the water column, and like mentioned clear water. The sunlight helps to do this to them

I caught one a few weeks ago with black lips. Regular looking fish but it looked like it had been drinking black ink. Lol.

I caught several bass in florida last month mid march from a stocked pond. Every last one of them was dark black, not a shade of green at all. The watter was very clear and lots of pads. Just assumed it had to do with the strain or water clarity
