anybody used the eagle claw trailmaster spin/fly rod in the fly configuration?
I bought one a while back to have a compact spinning rod at school and now that I've started getting into fly fishing I was kinda curious what weight line would be good on it?

It ought to have the line weight on it there somewhere? 5/6 or 7/8 possibly?

Nope, doesn't say anything. Online it says 2-8, but for some reason I doubt they're talking about fly line weight on that one. I kinda thought maybe 3-4 might be appropriate but I'm not very sure on that and don't really have the equipment (or money to buy said equipment) to test that theory out.

Oh yeah. Now I remember those markings on one of my Eagle Claw rods. Do you know anyone who fly fishes? Maybe they'd let you borrow their reel/line to try out? Are you an experienced caster at all? I ask because knowing how a rod ought to feel when it loads up is pretty much what we are looking for here.

I have one; its a 7.5 foot 7 weight; number TRFP224; it has another number A7H under the eagle; it also sez line #7; however, mine seems to be only a fly rod; I guess you could use a spin reel on it but the reelseat is at the end of the rod butt; it sez on it "four Piece Fly rod"

Seems like the FFF has a fly fishing club in the College Station area. I would try looking them up online to see when they are having a meeting you could visit and take the rod with you when you go. Bet you will meet some folks that would be happy to help you figure it out. You might be surprised how quick some fly reels and lines come lout of a few pickups to solve the problem.
Never hurts to find some others to go fishing with as well.

You can always just use an 8 weight line, and adjust the 'line out' length till you like the feel. This is a little know secret the works for all weight rods

What ? "Is this really truth ?"

Uh.... no.

(Its April Fools Day)

The ONLY reason to fish with a fly rod in Texas
is to throw a POPPER, casting any other type fly just means you're doing something.

I put a 4 weight line on it and it seems to cast well, although I later realized it said on the rod it was a 5 weight which made me feel kinda dumb...

Those numbers don't mean a thing if the setup feels right and casts right for you.

If it works, go with it. I have a 2 wt that I prefer a 3 wt WFF (Weight Forward Floating) line on. I also have a 6 wt I prefer a 5 wt on. Of course, if I could cast better, I might would prefer the proper weight. I have learned how to make what's there work.

I'm with you crazy; everybody has a different casting stroke; thus load the rod a little different; so it just stands to reason that we all would not prefer the same line for the rod; I'm not a good caster either but different than you; so where you might prefer a 5 weight forward, i might prefer a #6 double taper; the numbers on the rod just get you in the ballpark-p-

I have one and it is a 5-6 weight. I like it a lot because I want to carry a spin and fly reel with me at the same time as some of the places i fish get tight for the fly rod.
