I keep throwing a big swim bait at horseshoe falls wishing the river had more water in it.
Awesome fish.

Wow, way to go! Fantastic! World Record was just caught 2 months ago, by an older gentlemen that was 65 years old. Went fishing in his John Boat on a river in Alabama (not sure what river it was) but caught a Stripper weighing 70 lbs. It was on the internet here awhile back. Old world record was 68 lbs, broke it by 2 lbs. Humungous! Sorry, I meant Canyon record. Pretty much figured the world record would far surpass any Canyon fish.

Previous state record was a Guadalupe River fish at 50 lbs. Still the record for the river. They have a replica mount at Cabelas. 45 in long, 50 lbs. 3rd is a 49 lb 47in monster caught a month before. They were growing em big in 1996.

The fish from the river beat any fish caught out of the lake. There is just much more to eat in the river thanks to the trout stockings. Needless to say that striper had plenty to eat!
Just one more cast!

There's been alot of big fish caught below the dam. I remember a state record Rainbow Trout of 5 lbs was caught there to.

That stretch between the dam and Horseshoe Falls has many Stripers and the highest concentration in the river. If you want to chase them in other places try: Below the 306 Bridge at Maricopa in the upper 1/3 of the Tubers Loop, Barking Dog Pool down to S Turn Rapids, Little Ponderosa down to the Devil's Playground, Gilligan's Island down to and below the pool at Mountain Breeze. You will need to float most of these areas to effectively fish them.
The fly rod record was caught in BDP about 3 years ago appoximately 36lbs. TPWD also shocked 5 stripers from there 2 years ago for their hatchery program: 25lbs, 28lbs, 35lbs, 46lbs, 47lbs. There's at least 1 about 25lbs left and probably more. I've seen 40+lbers in the upper Tubers Loop. To land them you will need heavy line and good luck. The 50lber was caught below Horseshoe Falls before the 2002 flood filled it in. A Home owner partially dug it back out so there may be some there again.
The record Rainbow is now 8.92lb caught at Caulk Bluff on the Nueces. They purposely stocked those big enough to break the record to gain publicity for their winter stocking and tournament. That Trout was in the river about 24 hours. The previous record Rainbow came from the Guadalupe and it was 8.24lbs and the flyrod record is 7.21lbs. I have also seen pictures of Rainbows caught and released back to the Guadalupe in the 9-10lb range. Jimbo

Slant, clutter, price heights, waco falls all the way down to Dunlap and then some, Not many. I have already broke out my offshore gear after this last fish. I was almost out gunned with a bass rod
