On my bait rods use 17 lb big game and 12 lb vanish leader..on my lure rods I use 14 lb triline xl

I don't have any break off issues unless its my fault for tying a bad knot:)

If the breaks were due to timber, you would see abrasion on the end of the line where it broke. A clean break under heavy pressure suggests that you have something nicking your fishing line & weakening it - the obvious culprit is usually rod guides (the levelwind on your reel is next). Take a piece of nylon pantyhose and pull it through your rods guides; if they snag, you probably have found the cause of your fishing line breaking.

I say this because my hybrid reels have 20# mono on them my line usually only breaks when I get hung up on the bottom and I have to intentionally break it. Have had BIG fish on my line with lots of pressure & not lost fish to line breakage without an obvious cause ... like abrasion against rocks or timber ... or wrapped around my trolling motor ... or my anchor line ... or the swim step ...

I caught my biggest striper at about 50 pounds in a river with 12 pound mono and a Pflueger president spinning reel.

Suffix 832 is about 3 to 4 dollars more than power pro and I really can't tell a difference. I have had no problems with 20 pound smile

I use 15 lb Ande, have caught 40 pounders, and towed my boat with it. Palomar knots only.

Now if you want to CPR it yes 20# get it in dont run it and CPR back to fishing.
As to Texoma well not tried it yet but I bet 10# braid and lots of drag would work just my thinking

One of the big reasons for a mono line break off is frays. When you retie your lures or hooks you might want to take off about 12". Another consideration is using a heavier leader.

Take a look at the slab/fly set up that sandjohnny has pictured in his recent eagle mountain post. He once told me that he runs a 20# leader. When using a leader the statement about frays applies to the mainline above the swivel.

My son broke off what could have been his 10+lb hybrid PB on a 15lb test mono line... With mono line, beside rocks and timbers that could fray your line, you also have to worry about the amount of UV lights that your mono line has been exposed to... In hindsight, my son's mono line snapped on the segment that were above water all the time (segment that was most exposed to sunlight)...

I think I have found a fix to this problem... 20lb braided main line + 10' 20lb mono leader tied with a uni-uni knot. RETIE NEW LEADER EVERY WEEK. Problem solved.

The pursuit (where are the fish), rigs design and setup, scouting, the awesome feeling of casting your rigs 100+ yards out, the total focus on the fish and the elements, the outdoors... the total exhaustion at the end of your fishing day,... the cooler full of fish to bring home... Yeah, I'm going to miss bank fishing!

If you are going to rely on that knot, or any other for that matter a couple drops of super glue at the knot will seal the deal.
