My son is beginning to get at the age where he wants to have an open face reel. I was wondering what would be the best reel for him so he will not get discouraged while trying to learn how to throw it plus ole Daddy will not have to untangle the backlashes all the time. Your opinions would be greatly appreciated!

I recently adopted by 12 year old nephew and he has been going with me the last several months. I started him out on those H20 reels from academy and to my suprise he has rarely had backlash problems. No more than any of the rest of us and he has gotten accurate and has distance. I tied a weight only on one and had him throw it some in the yard before we went the first time and he's never had any problems.

An H2O Mettle would be good. Just make sure whatever it is, it's a decent quality reel, trying to learn on junky equipment is really frustrating, and you don't want that for a young angler.

I started with a pro qualifier, a little expensive but the reels I started with are over 10 years old and still great. Easy to set and easy to learn.

Just make sure you set all the settings right then tell him how to back them off as he gets better. Usually for someone that hasn't cast a bait caster I want the bait to just barely fall with the rod held at 45 degrees. Maybe even add a little tension.

I don't think the reel matters as much as the adjustment and amount of line on it. If the spool is real full, it will be difficult at first. Kuddos to you for being proactive and getting him involved with fishing.

Settings definatly matter most I would also be looking at low profile reels to better fit small hands.

My grandson started out using a BPS Pro Qualifier when he was five. He did well with it. Do not over fill the reel. I only spooled it half full untill he got to where he could cast and not back lash it.

Just about anything you already have would work. Try pulling out a full cast and a few more feet then putting some tape on the remainder of the line. That only lets the cast of line unspool. When he does get a nest (which needs to happen to learn) it is super easy to untangle.

I bought an Abu Black Max for my 5 yr old for christmas because he "wanted a real like daddy". It works just fine for him and sometimes I use it when I am with him when he bored and just wants to play in the dirt or play with my plastics on the boat. I think its a great reel for the price... I think they run about 50 bucks at academy.
I would be drinking but I have a Fishing problem.

I read a trick on here a while back for minimizing backlash for a novice. Once you have the reel spooled, you should make one long cast with it and strip off an additional 5 yds. Now put about 1" piece of electric tape on your spool, over the remaining line. Reel the line back in, over the tape. Now whenever that reel backlashes, it can never get any deeper than that piece of tape.

I've heard of that same trick for night fishing.
