Well fellas I got the approval from the wife and I am now in the market for a new boat. Pros vs Cons on the two motors?

I just went through the same decision and I went with the SHO in large pert due to getting 2 additional years of warranty free and an extra year on some promotion they were having...so i have a total of six year warranty on the motor. in a nutshell the decision for me came down to location of the dealer as it is between my house and home lake. And lastly all brands of engines will have issues and I personally have not heard of Yamaha not making it good. FYI, the SHO power is awesome as compared to my last Pro XS.

Both can have problems. I would let the warranty play a large part in my decision.

If the thing runs on gasoline sooner or later you are going to have problems. Test drive the boat with both motors if possible and then make your decision.

Bugs have been worked out of the Merc's for a while now.
Yamaha SHO is getting close(to the best of my knowledge, 6 engineering changes since they came out ). Yamaha offers the 5 year warranty twice a year(just ended in March) with option of purchasing a 6th for very reasonable price.
If you can wait until next Yamaha 5 year warranty offer(approx. June/July.), I'd go with it. If not, buy the Merc.

Mercury pro xs period, they can say all they want about hole shot and what ever else. A merc is the way to go . You can get five years on a merc also ask dealer for a coupon.

I'd stick with my Yamaha any day. My 13 year old Yammie has been Great! Three sets of plugs and a decarb in 13 years.Had a leaky fuel injector once and that is it. Starts on first crank every time. I think its the most reliable motor I have ever seen. Oh yes, and it doesn't rattle like a merc does.

Sho,,for me ..Love the warranty, Power, and gas Milage they have compared to the Pro..
I have 2 buddies with the same boat and set ups, but one has the Pro XS and the other a SHO
Sho boat is 8 mph faster with better hole shot, But the main thing to me is the gas Milage they each get. Sho it way better on those 2 boats. But both or Great motors, I just think the Sho is the Best bang for your buck right now. Just my 2 cents
