I just got a baitcaster reel, a Chronarch to be exact, and I want to spool it up with braid. I've never used braid and would like to try it. First, does the color of the braid matter if I'm going to use a fluoro leader? Second, what pound test for the mono backing? I have the suffix siege camo in 20lb test. Would that be fine or should I use something smaller? Also, how much mono backing do I use? Or I was wondering if I could tie the braid into the holes of the spool?

You need to match your backing with the diameter of the braid and same with the flouro leader. For 65lb power pro braid I use 15lb big game backing. Spool tight and use a blood knot to join the two.i spool a third with mono backing and the rest with braid. Color is more of a preference. People use yellow to watch the line better, black/green is most common, red is the first color to disappear in deep water. I only use braid for frogs, buzzbaits, flipping heavy cover, and Carolina rig main line.

Backing size isnt a huge deal...the smaller you use the better it tends to lay on the spool...and similar daimeter makes yorur backing to braid knot easier to tie..I like a green-ish braid...a black sharpie can be used as the braid starts to fade..length of backing can be a guessing game, but the 1/3 backing to 2/3 braid is a decent rule of thumb..dpends on the cpapacity of your reel...the heavier the braid, the less backing or you can hit your knot if 2/3 braid is only 50 yds., etc...of course, if you're flipping/pitching, it wont matter as much...likewise, small braid on a spinning rod, 2/3 braid may be more line than you have on the line spool..

I can't get enough of braid but maybe that's just me. For backing I would say smaller diameter but I'm not 100% if it matters all that much. It's really just a thing where you have try it out and see if you like it. My favorite thing about it besides the strength is the sensitivity.

If you use sunline FX2 you will not need a backing at all.
