Ok, qualifying my question: Staying under $1k, what do ya'll think is the best value for the dollar depth/fish finder if you were buying one or replacing one?
My 'rig' came with a Garmin GPS Sounder but their 'card slot' is limited to ONLY Garmin and no side imaging or pre-loaded maps whatsoever.....so.....am interested in upgrading.
What would ya'll buy? flag

Fishing is not a matter of life or death,
it's much more important than that!

After 1 trip I am impressed with the Elite 7 HDI I put up front. No side image, but I have that at console on my HDS8. Elite 7 seems good for the price.

Hi Don,
It is a Garmin GPSMAP 188 Sounder.
I am told it is only 8 or 9 years old, but it doesn't give the information I really need to show contour/structure on lakes such as Eagle Mountain Lake or Bridgeport.
Upgrade? Ok, please, tell me what you would be willing to do?

This might be a little high, but the lowrance HDS 7 with side imaging is 1500, but has a $300 mail in rebate right now.

for around a grand you can get a humminbird 798hd, has side and down image and will take 2 cards, one for maps and one for screen shots.

they have a 788 with just down image, color and maps capable.

the 598 is color and has just side image, again slots for cards.

I would recommend the 798 for overall value and best set up, had the earlier model (797) and loved it, now have a 998 on the dash and got an 898 for the bow but it is too big so selling it and will probably go with a 798 for size

Be careful with your fish finders on lake fork. I had 2 ripped off just last night. Someone across the lake had his taken and a trolling motor taken last nigh. It looks like they are trying to find an hds 10 but will settle for anything. Reports were filed by both of us.
