Went and got skunked today while everyone around me was pulling out fish. I was throwing clousers but I think they may have been too big. What size and what patterns are your go too for whites in the spring?

Yeah. Clousers is good. White with bead chain eyes. 2 inches.
Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, he'll be gone every weekend.

Tie them small, tie them sparse, tie them with short tails (whites are short strikers). The big advantage that fly fishers have over gear slingers when fishing for whites is how small our flies can be.

I usually use a 2 weight for whites, so I'm limited in what I can cast. I do well with #10 to #14 flies with small brass beadchain eyes and a small, 1 1/2" to 2" clump of Krystal Flash (usually chartreuse or pearl) tied Clouser-style. Some days that'll outfish the conventional tackle baits. Some days they ignore them. That's been my most consistent producer though. I gotta say, that two weight has been the best money I ever spent for white bass. I primarily saltwater fish, and I used to hit the whites occasionally during the spawning run. Now I can't wait for the run. The little rod is also a hoot when those 12" - 14" specks gang up under the lights at night, and the 5 weight feels like an elephant gun.

Try different presentation and depth. Sometimes a fly will Outfish conventional. I have the best luck with lightweight flies and sinking line if they are not on surface.

Beadhead green and white streamer with some krystal flash in it, sz 8-10. Pretty small. Was fishing one evening tearing them up, got too dark to tie on another fly, fished a beadhead streamer until it was shredded to just the bead and a little bit of green kraft fur, still caught fish, even though there was nothing left of the fly.

My therapist says she's happy I flyfish for the meditative qualities. Little does she know it's the cause of my PTSD.
Also touched by His noodly appendage.
