We bought a house in college station that has access to a private 45 acre lake. I have slowly but surely learned how to bass fish with decent success. Now, the last few times I have been out, I have landed a crappie or two. Question is, what is the preferred method or methods. I have never targeted crappie before but would sure like to.

It's better to fish with a guide and get a real education like so many of us have. If we know where you live, someone will know a guide or two in your area that can give you real education on Crappie fishing. It is just a fun as bass fishing and you keep them and eat 'em.

Welcome to the forum.. welcome

A private lake you say...ease your way around the lake on pretty days and visit with the folks out in the yard...find out who the lake's fishermen are then go talk to them...just keep talking and you will get useful info, and you will get to meet the neighbors.

In the mean time, anything that you can bump your boat into or have to go around, rocks, culverts, overflows, treetops laying in the water, brush hanging off the bank...are good starting points right now....later on, you have to focus on deeper underwater structure (that you may not be able to bump into) Hope this helps and good fishing.

Some of the best Crappie fishing I've ever had has been in small lakes like that.

Fish with a 1/16 oz roadrunner and catch everything in the lake.
Fish it slow and steady or raise and drop slowly and hold on.

If there's a few Crappie showing up then you can bet there's a lot more in it.

Good luck, you're a lucky man.

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

+10000000000: Beetle Spins also work well on small lakes. I have access to one about the same size and can tear the crappie up fishing from the bank with a green beetle spin in April and May. If you have any trees over hanging the water that is a good place to target.

Nothing quite compares to a limit of 2lb crappie on roadrunners or beatle spins on a private lake, with some big ole green trash fish, and hungry cats thrown in for good measure! Its kind of funny, thinking back, but motor oil colored bodies really seemed to cause a lot of catching activity in those small impoundments. Never really understood why...just always seemed to be the color I was digging for when I hit those places.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM ...........
if you are that far south they might be very shallow and spawning
you might think about a small jig under a float around shoreline cover ....about 12 to 18 under the float in 2 to 3 foot of water .....
the rest of the year the above advice will ketch them well also .....
best of luck to you ....
