Above pictured rig with coated,stranded steel wire and PVC works very well. Those of you who have seen pat's rig know the look. I made one similar to Pat's for +/- $15. Everything you need is only a Home Depot trip away.

Update: found a site on Ebay that sells them almost as cheap as I can get the stuff and make them. (12.95) Ordered 2 and I can use them to start off with. I'll try them out a while ,maybe add any improvements and make my own next time.

This is not my invention. I found it on line and thought I would share with the OP asking about. I thought it was a handy little item and I will attempt to recreate it for myself.

I would guess that the end being stationary they tied a big not before cementing the cap onto the pipe. Then they fed the line through as you see it.

I would feel that 3"-4" length would work fine.

Looks like an easy solution.
