If I may add a few points.I am the South Central Sales Manager for Navionics. Navionics and Lakemaster both are mapping companies and are only as good as they information they are able to collect. If data does not exsist, then it is very difficult to map a map of a body of water. Yes, we can survey a lake, however it takes time and resources to get that done and it is not an overnight process.

Navionics developed the first digital map nearly 30 years ago and that is all we do is create maps, whether it be for your plotter, your phone, your tablet.

Now to differences.
Coverage: Navionics south covers 12 states on one chart. In the south Lake Master has one chart for Texas Oklahoma, One for Florida Georgia and I understand coming with another for Louisiana Mississippi and Alabama. So 3 charts versus 1.

Updates: Navionics offer free unlimited updates to your chart for one year that you can do at your leisure from your home computer. As we find more data and make corrections you can get them through freshest data without waiting till the next version comes out. We have corrected and added over 100,000 items in just 9 months in the US. No other chart company offers this. If you want updates with everyone else you have to buy a new chart.

FreeComputer APP: With the purchase of a Navionics chart you receive a home computer application to install your region on your home computer to pre plan, transfer way points, routes, etc. This is free and no one else offers that.

Features: Navionics offers underwater structure in most lakes such as roadbeds, creek beds (minor and major) foundations, submerged ponds, submerged bridges and culverts and much more. The coast update program we did placed all the coastlines in their proper position and shape. All the boat docks are in the correct shape and location. As we find more we can add it through freshest data and you can get it through your free updates.

Lakes:
Navionics has more HD lakes such as Falcon and Amistad (both Mexican and US side) Toledo Bend as well as many others. We are adding more lakes as we get data and again if we add a lake you will be able to get it through Freshest data updates without waiting and without buying a new chart.

In Texas and Oklahoma this is Navionics Lake List:
Of these 136 are HD and in 1' contours. This is just OK. and TX so you can see the comparison to the Lakemaster chart. Do not forget there are 10 other states on the Navionics chart.

UCG: User generated content. We are allowing you, our customers, to actually add features and information that you are willing to share with others through our mobile and PC applications. This data is loaded on the chart when you update it and is visable on the plotter with the flip of a switch. At this tiem Lowrance HDS gen 1-2 and Raymarine E series are the only plotters that have this feature however others are coming.

Sonor logs: We are capturing information from fishermen in all areas by them recording sonor logs for us and we will be able to refing maps and add information as we get this info.

I think you will see that Navionics is beign aggressive and on the cutting edge of getting you the most accurate and recent data available.

Feel free to contact me via PM if you have any quiestions.

In the higher end HB units you can put both chips in the unit. Why not just do that and switch between them, get the best of both worlds.

this is what I do, I use the Lakemaster on the "HD" lakes ,because IMO, it is superior to Navionics on these lakes , and I use Navionics on a lot of the non "HD" lakes.

Honestly, if Navionics bang wouldn't have put out a map with 20-30% of some of the lake (mapping) missing on a couple lakes I fish, I probably would not have a need to have any other chip.

They both fill a need for me...

the ones I have found some of the mapping missing are Fork and T'wok. Not sure if there are anymore.

You only get free updates if you purchase specific cards and only after specific years. If you bought the Navionics hot maps card before it was not available anymore then no updates! And that card doesn't have any creek channels, roadbeds, tank dams and so on on the lakes I fish. Sure I get hd lakes and contour lines but that is about it and I paid almost $100 for that card. So now my only choice is to keep using that card or upgrade to the premium or platnum in order to get those updates. And I would bet my lakes still will not have any of the data mentioned. And yippie, free updates for a year. Wonder how many updates for all the lakes are available in that year. If you can put that data on your iPHone app then put it on the cards for all the lakes.

$10 and read the reviews on it before you buy. Not worth it.

Patriot,
Yes, LakeMaster lets you adjust the map for the actual lake level, up or down. Depth labels and any highlighted depths you may have put in all change to the level you set it for.

Doug E Fresh, I think if you look at our latest updates on Fork and Twakoni you will be impressed. We have added several new features and information in the update process. Another reason for getting Navionics, tha baility to update as we find more information.

Chad- why do you think the Mobile application is not worth the money? Have you persoanlly used it? I think you will find the app quite useful and informative. You get Navionics maps on your phone for the entire US for $9.99. You can put way points, routes, track your self, see interesting articles from leading magazines and writers for different areas of the country, actually place information on the app to share with other app users through our User Generated Content feature and the community layer. So for $9.99 it is a great value.

Interesting, did not know that. That's a very useful feature.

Okay - I originaly bought the Navionics (permium south) maps because Lakemaster did not have the lake I fish the most, Lake Lavon. It is just 5 miles away. After I bought the Navionics, Lakemaster came out with an Update that seemed to almost double the number lakes it had for Texas and I bought it also.

Side by side, the Navionics seems great at first but if I were fishing primarily Texas and Oaklahoma and could only buy only one map chip, I would buy Lakemaster. It has some great fetures like being able to change the lake level and have the contour lines automatically adust the depth to match the change in the lake level. This was great in the drought Also you can highlight a depth range. If you highlight a range of 18 to 22 feet, it will make any humps between 18 to 22 feet under the water so that they jump out in red and are easy to see.

Right now I am not impressed with the Navionics PC APP and the download process to update the maps on the Navionics Map chip. They don't appear to be the most user friendly applications. The Navionics PC APP lacks clear instructions on how to use it The support for the PC App is very poor. The application is cheap but I think it needs a lot of development to make it user friendly.

I have a Humminbird plotter and I like the Lakemaster maps because of the features offered on the Humminbird for the Lakemaster Maps.

Also I have tried Lakemaster's Contour Elite trial version. This is Lakemaster's equivelant of Navionics PC App. It has great way point management and is very user friendly. I am interested to see how well it works when I get the full version since the trial version only has one lake, Green Lake in Minnisota. It is $100 more than the Navionics PC App but I am expecting it to be worth the money. I am also impress by Lakemaster's response to question about the software, even though I was only using the trial version.

I am glad that I have both the Navionics and the Lakemaster maps but unless Navionics improves their features and their online interfaces, I doubt that I will ever update my current Navionics maps.

I expect this to continue the battle between Lowrance and Humminbird. Humminbird owns Lakemaster and will cater to the Humminbird users and I feel that Navionics leans toward Lowrance. I bought Humminbird because I felt that Johnson Motors is user friendly. So far I have not been dissapointed.
