Seems to me your 2 fish limit favors those who prefer to fish with live bait - apparently what you have to do to catch the largest fish. The best hybrid fisherman on the lake, who prefers artificial baits, said, "There's no point in entering the Cedar Creek tournament because the guys who fish with live shad always win." If he doesn't have a chance, then neither do I, so I don't enter. I believe far more people fish hybrids with artificials than with live bait.

I think you would get more participation if you would increase the limit to 5 fish. That way those who know how to find and catch the predominant sized fish here (20 to 26 inches) might have a chance if they limit out, and therefore would enter the tourney. Just a suggestion for your consideration.

Hey Dennis,

Thanks for your input and assessment. I have been running this organization for the last few years but Im not an expert on the history of how this all came about. Randy Wood, long time TSA member and past president has been around for years and may chime in on this subject. We are always talking or considering ways to have a successful artificial only tournament. I think Cedar Creek would be one of those lakes that an artificial only tournament could work. It is my understanding the 2 fish limit was something that was done in regards to conservation. The TSA is not opposed to considering this in the future. Thanks for you input.

Dennis you are correct about the live bait but a few years ago we won first place fishing only artificial and there were people using live bait. You never know!!

Have 2 divisions. One for bait guys and one for artificial guys.

Maybe the two fish limit is a throwback to the now defunked NSBA tourn trail ?

This challenge is brought up from time to time. Here is my outlook on the subject:

TPWD says that you can keep up to 5 striped fish per day.
(exception Texoma)
TSA allows you to keep 2 striped fish.

Either way, if you catch your fish on live bait or lures, you're going to have to throw back fish and keep ONLY 2 fish for a TSA tournament.

If you're a lure guy and you think you are the best of the best, then join the TSA and fish. What are you scared about? Either way you still have to know where, how and what depth to fish at. Lures can out-produce live bait if used in the right setting. Just as Live bait can out produce lures is presented properly.

Holzer: What is theoretically possible and what actually happens is often far apart. Does anyone keep statistics on TSA tournaments? If they do, could they show us, for the tournaments where hybrids but not stripers are stocked, the number of tournaments, the number won by live bait fishermen and the number won by artificial bait fishermen?

That would be some interesting statistics Dennis. The one year I did some TSA tournaments I think bait fishing won every single one and the top three places and more on most every tournament I recall were all bait only...and of course we were fishing artificials.

Those results would seem to support Dennis' point. Maybe upping the fish to 3 or 4 would help. Or maybe those of us throwing artificials which I prefer, may need to spend some time using live bait.
