Caught tons of these in the cast net trying to get shad today in the san gabriel. Never seen one before

Log perch the only "real" perch species in texas

NOT a log perch. Log perch tend to have more of a vertical stripe than a vertical blotch like this guy has. Also, log perch don't get that stripe that runs from nose to tail like this guy. I would say he looks more similar to a dusky darter.
Also, for those who don't know, there's around 2 dozen different true "perch" species in Texas, which includes log perch and darters.
No fish is too good for the grease.
