Hi there, currently I am away from home (fort hood). I will be coming back mid summer and hitting the lakes as soon as possible. This is basically my introduction on this forum I suppose. I am originally from Washington State and have fished all my life. I grew up on trout and blue gill, and a few years ago have grown to love bass fishing. I am 23 and have so much more to learn about bass fishing, and the information and fishermen on this forum are helping me do just that. I enjoy pursuing largemouth with soft plastics and cranks, but when I came down I took a guided trip out on belton to learn what Texas was all about, and I learned about stripers, hybrids and whites. I guess if I have one question right now, it's "can I go for largemouth on stillhouse and belton, or is it more practical to pursue stripers/hybrids?" Fishing the ponds on fort hood I do ok getting largemouths from shore, but I will be fishing from a boat when I settle back in around the fort hood area. Thank you

Oh sorry, i didnt read your whole post. I just got off cq and im half asleep haha. I Havent been here long either, i do fairly well at stillhouse off the shore with largemouths. I got a 5lb a few months ago which is my personal best. I cant give you much insight about anything off the lake since i dont have a boat. Welcome!

Well if you have a boat, I would say all those fish are fair game. Belton for the hybrids and smallies and stillhouse for the largemouth. Not to say you cant catch the other species, but that's how I usually fish. Hope we get some rain though, the lake levels have made fishing all around tough most of the time.

There is a group called the Army Bass anglers that has a large membership there.

I have been thinking about sporting an AF bass angler jersey myself.

Armadillo Joe forgot more about Lake Fork than most guys know. A trip with Joe would be a real treat.

Wow thank you everyone for the welcome/information. I will stay active on here until I get home so I am prepared to get right back into the swing of things as soon as possible. Thank you to everyone who offered to help me and show me the central texas ropes. @Armadillo - I have family in dallas so me heading up to Fork is goin to happen, I have heard great things about that lake and according to Basschaser you know a lot about it. @Steven Wise you seem to be in the same boat as me (even though we both have yet to fish out of one in Texas lol), keep slayin them (5 lbs is a great fish!) and maybe we can link up when I get home and we'll get out on the water and learn it together. @SNMCC I am looking into that group now, thank you for that reference, I need a close knit group to link up with for fishing, it is so great to be able to link up and share knowladge and have a great time fishing.

Make sure you sign up for the Fishing for Freedom event October 18-19 when the sign ups start. www.fishingforfreedom.org

I've participated in this event the last two years and plan to keep going for the next 20. It's a one-of-a-kind thing they do for soldiers.

I have heard of Fishing For Freedom, sounds like and excellent event, and I will be home in time so I will be there. @TopGunPilot I don't know a Captain Hummell but maybe I should because I have begun my process of applying to become a Warrant Officer to fly choppers, could be a good resource for me (and might be able to give me some fishing advice which is just as important!)
