IMHO i have given up on belton and stillhouse, all the times i have attempted to go ive been disgusted with either rude people or just lack of good bank spots due to water level, I had one decent evening at franks with a buncha folks i have fished that spot for years with but other than that I think I have done nothing but waste gas and bait going to those two.

I think that if we get some major rain maybe the summer can be decent for a while at least.

The old timers tell me the only thing that can bust this drought is a hurricane or a tropical depression that stalls over central Texas.........

In the early 90's it rained hard for a few days a put the Leon on a 42 ft. rise. The water was touching the bottom of the 36 bridge. To say the least, fishing turned around. 9 lb. black bass being caught on the parking lot at Cedar Ridge. Took over a year to bring Belton back to normal level.

Yeah I know. My health ain't the best and was wanting to get after them one more time. Belton used to be a sweet honey hole. I do have access to a 30 acre private lake I'm going to check out this weekend. Weather permitting.

Belton was off last year for sure, but produced great weights the year before (by its standards). I'm finally going tomorrow to check.

The lake went over the spillway in 1992 which I think was the highest it has ever been. It did not stay there very long. In 2007 it got almost as high and stayed a lot longer, long enough to kill most of the vegetation several feet up from the shoreline. Fishing was good a couple of years after those events. But for the last several years, it has hardly gotten above conservation level, and then starts a gradual decline. Summer before last, it was down almost 14 ft, but came back up last spring to a few feet above conservation level and then started back down to 7+' low as of now. Only going to get worse as BRA builds pipeline from Belton to Stillhouse and then moves water from Lake Belton to Lake Stillhouse, to Lake Georgetown and then to Cities of Roundrock and Georgetown. I would suspect that a declining water level impacts the spawn which has often been the case. Unfortunately that has been the case with most all Texas Lakes, especially Central Texas lakes.

I think you are right! Even Lake Granger has not produced as it has the past couple of years. Winter fishing last couple of years a bad night was 22+ fish... we have been lucky to pull 15 fish in a long night of fishing this year! I am ready for that hurricane or tropical depression to come sit on us and fill ALL the lakes up! I think that is the only way things will get better.

Sad, but true. I'm going to look and see if I can find that address in Canada where you can buy Crappie filets. That would be cheaper than buying gas and chasing down the wind here.....just say'in.....

tell me about it. i havent even gone out to granger in a couple years now, cause the last fifty times i went i caught nothin but a buzz. we had one good day on the spillway, caught enough fish to have a little dinner, but that was it. if i go out this year and don't catch much it's gonna be time for me to find a new lake to fish out of.

life goes on

www.walleyedirect.com

They are out of Crappie Fillets right now, but the ice should go out of the lakes in Canada in early June. They should have some then. Five pounds for just $90 plus shipping. What a deal.
