A little update.....These light are bright and look like theyre going to work good. I just need to get out and go fishing.
First problem : By wrapping the lights close together the lights will put off some heat. I turned the first one on for about 2 hr and it got hot. once it cooled down, i notice that the clear plastic had a few cracks in it. I fixed it and will not turn them on again unless there in the water.
Second problem: Didnt put enough weighs in them and it floats. I just added some weight to the bottom and got it to sink.

This is the most interesting thread I have read in weeks. I love to see people build something like this. Much more fun than just buying one.

they are 12v so I just hook them to a battery. I bought the wire at McCoys, it was the only 2 strand wire i could find around here. I got the LED off EBay. I got them for about $16 shipped for 5 meters or 16' of lights. here is the auction i bought. http://www.ebay.com/itm/200871101159?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 heres another green one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Green-Waterproof...=item5d3a1a5ac3I also just bought some white strips to put under my pontoon. here is the link http://www.ebay.com/itm/White-Waterproof...=item2a2780ce7eI you buy any just make sure they are waterproof and the 5050 are brighter than the 3528. They can be cut every third light so you can make them whatever length you need. You can also solder wires onto the piece you cut off so theres no waste.

Amazon has the light strips in Green, white, blue and red. They even have some that change colors. They sell for $15-$30. Oh and they have the clear tubing pretty cheap.

Looking on eBay, I found tons of light strings in Hong Kong for super cheap prices, like $30 per 5-meter reel cheap. But I do have some worries: would these LEDs be less efficient than the ones I would buy here? There must be some reason why these ones are so much cheaper. My other worry is that the wattage listed on that eBay listing is only 42W for 300 LEDs ( the one I was previously looking at was 72W for 300 LEDs), and it doesn't list the colour temperature, lumens, or amps. Does the reduced wattage guarantee a worse product?

I learned that they use different material for the cover for the strip. Like exposy glue or silicone gel. The one you got should be with exposy gel. The exposy is crisp when temperature raise, while the silicone gel made strip keep its flexibility as heat goes on. Just a suggestion for the followers, to check this with the seller, to get the silicone gel ones for long time lighting.
