I'm thinkin Texas Rat snake. Found it crawling up the side of the house trying to get into the attic. Re-located to the local park...

It is a rat snake, Pantherophis emoryi or Emory's rat snake. William Emory (Benjamin Franklin's great-grandson in law) first described this species as a cartographer for the U.S. Army. He collected many of the species of the Southwestern U.S. as he made maps of the country. Many were named after him.
My son named his sister after this species. His mother gave us a list of ten names, one was Emory. "Emory, after Pantherophis emoryi!" exclaimed my boy. "What do think Papa?" That was it. Emory it was. Here she is last week as we herped the areas near the house.

Below is Pantherophis obsoletus lindheimeri or Texas rat snake. My guess is you are west of Dallas. You start to see fewer "T rats" west of the DFW area. They are a lot better looking than "T rats," IMO.

No worries. If you are in Brazos County, it could be Pantherophis slowinskii. They interbreed with emoryi there. Cool snake!

Pope you nailed it. I had one as a pet when I was a kid, I would put his tank out on the front porch for him to sun and the mail man would refuse to leave the mail if he was out there.

She must've smelled a rat.

Also, kids that know some Latin and aren't unduly fearful of snakes? Incredible.

This is why I never believe someone who says they just saw or killed a copperhead.
