Good luck man. I've heard they are catching them on whiting and ray. Sheepshead and black drum will be good too. The sandbar sharks are in full force. They are some of the hardest fighting sharks for their size. Get ready for a good time! I can't wait to hear how you do. I'm landlocked until the 23rd.

I have caught plenty of baby hammerheads, but this trip I will have the chance to really get those baits out and rig up right. My goal is to get one over 5ft, that would make the trip for me for sure. i have 2 penn 6/0, 2 4/0,a diawa saltist 30 on a surf casting rod, and a diawa sha20 on a breakawayusa LDX. Ive got all the pieces of the puzzle put together and figured out, this is the trip!! Cant wait!

Looking at the surf forcast, late tuesday and into wednesday is going to be my chance to launch the yak (1-2 ft waves expected). Sat - mon unless the surf breaks, will be primarily setting up camp, catching bait, and hopefully getting those Diawas out to some larger reds. MAN IM PUMPED!

eddie978n do you know where you are going to set up camp?

Monte, not exactly sure yet. I would like to make it to the end of the island, but thats something like 60 miles down. It will all depend really on the spring breakers. I want to get far enough down to have some privacy from all the madness, lol. I know there is a shipwreck right off the beach, so I would love to try and fish around that. I am going to spend saturday catching bait and scouting the beach, but I will probably try and stay around the 30 mile marker. If your going down the beach and you see a silver crew cab ram (traded in the chevy)with colorado plates, that will be me. Feel free to stop by or join the camp.

Cool Eddie I'll come see your set up if I get that far down the beach. That ship wreck sounds really cool....

Hey guys sorry for not updating, I had NO service at all on the beach. I will have a pretty good video to share in the upcoming weeks as I had two cameras, one the go pro on my head so I got some GREAT action shots of fighting fish.

Overall the fishing was on fire, driving conditions were great as I made it all the way to the 60mile mark and back in 2 wheel drive (during low tide)
I caught as many whiting and pompano as a guy could handle, big ones too, well for these type of fish anyways. I had a couple whiting that I had to second guess if they were rat reds or not, thats how big they were. Only a handfull of hardheads the entire week. I also got one slot red (23.5), for some reason I thought the slot was 24-28 so I let him go (first trip back to texas in almost 5 years, should have triple checked regs I know). I got two big bull reds both well over 40", and then my red fish rigs started getting bit off left and right so i knew it was time for the shark fishing.
I got 4 total sharks landed, with at least that many hitting, making initial runs and then not coming back, or breaking me off. I got one almost 4ft on a medium action 9ft rod with a diawa saltist 30 series, that was ALOT of fun! the larger one came off of the pen 4/0 and a heavy action 6fter.
Both big bull reds came off of a diawa sha20, on a LDX rod from breakawayusa.com Nick at breakaway is a great guy, love to share and teach you surf casting / fishing, so if you guys are ever in the area look him up.
anyways not much seaweed, some, but not so much that your constantly working lines. weather was great, fishing was great, couldnt have asked for anything more.
Here are some pics, most look funny because I took them from video, I will have an edited video of the entire trip, including gopro action shots in the next couple of weeks. Enjoy some pics for now!

Congrats! That's awesome that the blacktips are already down there! Water is warming up quick this year! I hope the sandbars stick around a little while longer though.
