Heading to Amistad this coming Friday! Cant wait. Was hoping I could get some insight on what I need on my boat in case I get boarded? Fire extinguisher etc. been surfing the net but cant find a clear description of exactly what is required. I'm from NM so new to the Texas laws. Thanks, jake

Fire extinguisher, life jackets for all occupants (those age 13 and under have to wear pfd's at all times), a throwable pfd, a horn or whistle, copy of the boats registration, and just for Amistad, you will need a pass from the national park service. They have a visitors center where you can purchase an annual one, or you can buy them by the day at the machines at the ramps. Also, everyone in the boat must have a Mexican fishing license if you will be on the Mexico side of the lake, whether fishing or not.
I'm sure I left something out.

They always check registration, life jackets, throw cushion, fire extinguisher and fishing license... Border patrol didn't check anything just asked if we were fishing a tourney and did we come in contact with anyone while we were in mexican waters.

They are asking that you keep the throwable device out of the compartment; but they are not writting tickets on it. They just want it out and this is strange; they want it out even if you are fishing by yourself.

It is a good idea to have an anchor on board and rope that is 50 ft. long; not because it is a regulation but if you get in trouble it could save your boat from washing up on the rocks sidways. It would also hold you out on the river channel so you could be seen by those passing by to get a tow.

Is it a 50' or 100' rope that the Coast Guard requires Don?

This has been the subject of many discussions. I looked on the Texas Boater Safety Website to see if the throwable needed to be out on the deck and I could find NOTHING that even suggested it was a law. I keep mine out and available at all times as I figure I will be the one that needs it but if it is a law I can not find it.

ALSO---If you wear an inflatable PFD it only counts when you have it on. If you take it off you MUST have a regular PFD on board to be legal.

Hopefully common sense and safety will make us want to do better than lawful minimums anyway.

I ask if they ever tried to paddle a bass boat.
They didn't think it was funny and told me to get a paddle. They use to
Want flares , but I don't think so a my more.

Not if it is a Type II

Taking 5 to the weigh-in occurs when opportunity meets successful execution of one's preparation.

I really don't know. I have had people tell me that the anchor and rope is no longer required.
All I know is there will always be one in my boat to keep me off the rocks if need be.

Amistad is owned by the national park service. Not TPWD, and it's the only lake I've ever heard of where they were telling boaters to have the throw cushion out. Heard about it many times on this site by different people.

Scroll to the bottom. Says the throw able must be readily accessible.

I like being checked by the beautiful little gal on the Mexico side of the lake. I play real dumm in hopes she will board the boat for a up close and thurough search.

Amistad is also a Coast Guard regulated lake, there are plenty or officials
On that lake to keep you lined out. I sure miss it sense moving to East
Texas. I would live there if I could.
