ATTEN-HUT!

Be seated.

No fly flinger ever caught a fish by whining about the wind.

Men, all this stuff you've heard about fly anglers not wanting to fish in the wind, wanting to stay out of the breeze, is a lot of horse dung. Fly flingers, traditionally, love to fish. All real fly flingers love the sting of a 20 mph wind. When you were kids, you all admired the champion line shooters, the fastest line speed, big league casting champions, the toughest fishermen. Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. I wouldn't give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That's why fly fishermen have never lost and will never lose a day of fishing, because the very thought of losing a day of fishing is hateful to fly flingers.

Now, we have the finest food and equipment, the best spirit, and the best anglers in the world. You know, by God I, I actually pity those poor fish we're going up against, by God, I do. We're not just going to hook them; we're going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the spools of our reels. We're going to catch those lousy sons of fishes by the bushel.

The Fish are the enemy. Wade into them. Spill their blood. Hook them in the mouth. When you put your hand into a bunch of goo that a moment before was your best friend's bait, you'll know what to do.

Now, there's one thing that you men will be able to say when you get back home. And you may thank God for it. Thirty years from now when youre sitting around your fireside with your grandson on your knee, and he asks you: "What did you do in the great Spring of '13?" You won't have to say, "Well, I stayed home and whined about the wind."

Alright, now, you magnificent flingers of flies, you know how I feel. Oh... I will be proud to lead you wonderful guys into fishing anytime, anywhere.

That's all.

If good ol' Blood and Guts had been a fly fisherman, that's what he'd tell you about fishing in the wind. Are you going to let him down?

Maybe some visual stimulation will help. These were all caught this evening on good ol' Sooper Seekrit Stock Tank #7. The bite is on. It's up to you as to whether or not you take advantage of it.

Other than using the Lords name in vain I agree with everything you have said and lovely fish by the way.

If the wind is too strong for a back cast I feed out line then just lift the line into the wind and let the wind lift the line out then just drop the rod. A roll cast will also do the trick.

I was readin', and thinkin' "I know that speech. Where is that from?" (My diction is much better in my head)
Then I heard 'im. That gravel voice. That staccato delivery with the with the similarly staccato pauses...

Then I 'membered, he's got a tendency to slap his tired, battle-shocked flies on the water, rather than a gentle, thoughtful presentation. But dammit, the man knows how to win a wa... uhhhh, catch a fish.

Thank you, gentlemen. birddogs2, thank you for your service, my dear old daddy is a Viet Nam veteran as well.

So that you know I'm practicing what I preach about going toe to toe with the fast moving air particles, here are today's offerings.

Windy days are not days to discover that when you had your battery checked by that 17 yr old kid at the parts store & he said "oh yea man, this battery is over 13 volts, its plenty good"...to which I now reply "kid you know you are lucky, cause when that battery died in a 20 mph breeze you were not in my boat"... anyway, switched TM over to run off start battery & all was good again. Unlike Texredraider who charged fearlessly into the wind, I waited unitll the sun was setting, my favorite time of day when you take off you sunglasses and realize you still got 45 minutes left before it gets really dark...and then the little rings & swirls become apparent amid the emergent vegetation & you make a nice cast and the popper lands gently next to the reeds, give a quick pop-pop. pop-pop and the the water erupts with MR LMB want'n to tussle a bit.

Awesome, Mike! It's been too long since you've posted some bassy goodness. Plus that's a good reminder that I've got to get my batt'rys checked on the 'Ween.

Thanks, George. I hope you can get out there soon.

Thanks Dusty, I have been getting out but haven't posted for a couple of reasons - I am careful in making reports from private waters but it doesn't bother you a bit so I guess I'll post more and you can cover my back... grin

The real reason is that I am into Camelot Bell bass genetics these days and culling male pure Florida bass to get better odds of one on one spawn from CB as well as improving my Floridas.
The CB bass have been developed for fast growing, catchability and confirmation interesting to me but doubtful for othe TFFers.also catching as many as possible as quickly as possible on spinner baits and crank baits BIG TROUBLE on the forum.. cry
Only twice in 12 years so OK right..
Be back on em post spawn with UDF bass bugs!

George, if they're the kind of purist that would be terribly offended by your using that weird conventional gear to take a scientific survey of your ponds (and maybe have some fun), then they probably never made it this far into the thread where the weirdo in the hat caught green-rough fish on hooks that were too big, spinner bait skirt material, and a saltwater rod. smile

I hope no one takes offense to the private water thing. We all have access to different water. I try not to get too jealous of the salty water guys with the coast in their backyard, or the folks that get to look at mountains when they chase them there troutfish.

The water those fish came out of is really nothing that out of the ordinary, as ponds go. It's certainly not intensively managed. The interesting thing about this stock tank is that it was built about 20 years ago and only stocked with channel cats and coppernosed bluegill. It was NEVER stocked with bass. I haven't caught a cat out of there in at least two years. These bass survived having this body of water go from 3-4 acres down to a puddle less than 75 feet in diameter in the summer of '11. It just seems to have made them angry.

Thanks, Jerry. I figure with as many remakes as Hollywood cranks out these days, I'll be a shoe-in for the hottest new screen writer of the decade. Then I can gripe about having to sit at my desk rewriting and not fishing instead of looking at cow manure and not fishing.

Thanks Dusty, I worry about folks taking offense at private water fishing but most of us have paid our dues.

I knew there would be some comment about hardware use in harvesting pure DNA tested Florida bass to transfer to a good friends brand new 12-acre private lake.
Fly fishing folks could learn a lot from all types of fishing heck, most of my fly tyin innovations come from the gear guys I love em.

I caught my first bass on Tenkara fly rod some 80 years ago I was about 8 years old and caught it on a berry blossom fly.

Have fun with this stuff!

When I first started fly fishing, there was a little pay-to-play swimming and fishing hole around the corner that was the only place I would even TRY to fish from. No trees, no stick-ups in the water, and only acres of grass behind me. In other words, I only lost flies to bad knots and bad casting. But, it had a ready supply of bream and small bass that were willing to attack my ugly and/or store bought flies. Once I knew a little more about what I was doing, I was more willing to fish other places where I could lose flies to vegetation.
They eventually changed the rules at that little lake, to where it wasn't as fun to go chase the easy fishes, and I don't go there any more. I still wouldn't have changed it, though.
