Question....
What causes some bass to be "bug-eyed"? For example, two years ago at Fork....my buddy caught an 8# fish that had the biggest damn eyes I've ever seen on a bass in my life (looked like shooter marbles).
However, last year at Falcon I caught an 11.15# and 10.20#.....of which neither had abnormally large looking eyes (much smaller than my buddy's 8 pounder from Fork). So does anyone have any theories on the reasoning behind this?

Fast growing bass whose body thickness outgrows their head. Falcon fish tend to be longer/pound than their fork cousins. And many Fork and Falcon fish who have a high degree of Florida genes will exhibit small mouths/heads relative to their girth. This causes the eyes to be pushed up and outwards. I caught an 11.25 at Falcon two springs ago that was built like this and she was bug eyed.
That's my theory on it anyway. But it really is just a NSWAG!

Sometimes when you pull a bass up quickly from deep water (>15-20') the rapid change in pressure will cause their eyes to protrude, giving the "bug eyed" appearance.

AgSellers theory makes sense to me. Unless of course tons of people have seen them come out of shallow water?

AgSellers theory makes sense to me. Unless of course tons of people have seen them come out of shallow water? I've seen a bunch of bug-eyed beasts in shallow water. The 11.25 at Falcon was in 4 feet. The 14.75 I caught at Camelot Bell was in two feet. And I've caught many, many more over 10 in shallow water with bug eyes. Not saying a distended air bladder couldn't cause that appearance, too.

It could also be what is called "pop-eye" caused by fluid buildup behind the eyes from an infection.

The bug-eyed fish fit right in with my black spotted ones. Always understood that the protruding eyes were from deep water pressure release when caught until I caught one in a shallow cove last summer. I'm sure there is a real reason for the bug-eyes but can't be concerned about now since I'm trying to total today's Fork deep diver/timber losses.
