Elliott and I were talking about that today. I've been tubing for 17 years now and only ever had 1 run in with a snake. And it was completely my fault. I was fishing around the reeds and weeds at mineral wells. Got hung up and went over to try and get my lure. Well, being 20 and impatient, I was thrashing and slapping my rod to get the lure when I looked, and not 2 feet in front of me, that I had unbeknownst to me, been hitting a cotton mouth on top of the head. It was pretty ticked off as you can imagine. I cut line and kicked outta there faster than you can say snake bite. It didn't strike but another thump in the head and it probably would have. And sure, you'll see from from time to time, but they don't care about you. Unless you go all mike Tyson on them and try to beat the snot out of them.

Been tubin for a long time myself. What exactly would you consider a snake problem? This is from last spring. I really took about 20 pics of it because it was so big. I finally rubbed his back with my fishing pole a little bit and he just eased off into the water and swam to the bank. For the most part the only time you need to worry about a snake is when he has to worry about you. Put him in a corner and get too close and bang, gotcha. Give him space to get away and you got no problem. Snakes are not attack animals. Neither are spiders, but I will hurt myself to get one off of me. I have waded and tubed up to some places where almost every limb had a snake on it. I am highly inclined to remove myself from "their" fishing hole.I just give them more space. Sometimes a lot of space. Most of the time they are not cottonmouths. They are common all day long water snakes. Fish eaters not unlike the cormorant. Not protected however. But they have some serious teeth, and carry all sorts of nasty bacteria. Again, not shy when it comes to taking your fish off of a stringer, but they are not aggressive. This is a cottonmouth: He will run from you too. He might fight for your fish but not likely. They are solitary animals, and you may come up on 2 now and then but they are generally mating and will split soon after. Their bite is not a death sentence. A serious matter yes! get to the hospital fast, and give them a heads up you are coming. (DO NOT PANIC!) This can kill you. Be calm. The more calm you are the better. Your adrenaline will move the venom thru your system faster when you are freaking out. Just a little info I like to pass around this time of year.

I am brand new to this forum and to tube fishing. Just bought a tube last week, and spent the weekend modifying it to fit my needs...at least what I think will be my needs. I should have taken it out first, then started riggin...I did it all backwards. Anyways, I am looking for some good spots to try this new boat out in the Collin County area. I live in Allen. I have a pond directly across from my house, but I doubt the neighborhood association would like me floating this thing in the pond. Does anyone have any good suggestions for accessible ponds in the Allen / Plano area? Here are some pics of the mod for your laughter: http://s1325.beta.photobucket.com/user/Aaron_Dolton/library/Float%20Tube%20Mods(Yes...that is a golf umbrella I rigged up to provide shade in the summer...I can remove/lower it when windy so that I don't turn this thing into a sailboat) Thanks in advance for any input.
