For those veteran land based shark fisherman out there. Im going to be moving to corpus and will be setting up for some serious LBSF. Im fairly limited on budget for now due to having to buy EVERYTHING LoL. With that said im Pretty sure im gonna be buying 2 new diawa sealine 900H Reels. I have found some nice 100-130 class rods for less than 100 each and I have a choice to make between Roller guides or standard. I was wondering what you all prefer and why. Cost is marginaly more for the roller guides not much at all though.
I will more than likly be using a 100 lbs Power pro base with a mono topshot.

Welcome to the addiction.

I would stick with standard guides. That rod is going to be pretty stiff for a 900H, but if you can get a good deal on it then you can always upgrade your reel later.

I fish 2 Avet 50Ws as my big reels. I have them on 60-100lb rods that I built for them. Both have fuji hardloy guides.

Roller guides are expensive and unnecessary for most LBSF uses. They help with wind on connections and splices and they help during long periods of heavy drag. They are a little more high maintenance because you have to keep them clean after every trip. I would go with standard ring guides, especially for that reel.

Thx hunt eventually.. could be next tax return season, but I want 2x avet 50w T-RX but they run 800 each just for the reels. The rods im looking at are from ebay custom built rods Davis big game rods I beleive is the the maker. Would you recomend a lighter class rod? for those reels. Ill more than likly keep the rod/reels till they completly wear out though they wont be my "big rods" for ever. I was thinking that a lighter class rod may be better. I never thought bout the maintenance aspect of the rollers either. I think i will go with standerd guides.
Thinking about maybe a standerd guide 50-80 class rod

I think the 50-80 would suit a 900h better and would even be good for a 50w. If you are primarily fishing Texas, most of the sharks you catch will be under 7'. There is the chance to hook up to some monsters down in South Texas and that rod should handle them too. I like my 60-100 because even though it is stiff, it will still give enough that I can have fun fighting the smaller fish and the tip bends well with the waves.
