I currently drive a Ford F250 Diesel, but it's 10 years old (76K miles) and I don't get to drive it much any more since I have a corporate lease vehicle for full time use. I only use the truck for towing the boat and some hunting trips.

Do any of you have that truck around the 2012 year model? If so, how well does it tow your boat? Does it search for gears in the hills? Any complaints? Give me the skinny.

You question seems kinda confusing to me? Your asking about the Dodge right? For the life of me I dont see why that truck would have any problems pulling your boat. Big motor, 3.73 or 4.10 rear axle ratio, heavy duty transmission. I inquired about that truck a few months ago and only got a few responses (mostly on the hunting forum), seems like gas mileage averaged around 10-13mpg.
But I dont see anything wrong with your diesel, unless you just want another truck. Or is your lease truck the Dodge? That 7.3 ought to sell pretty dang quick if it's 4x4. Pretty hot market for them and the 4x4 5.9 Cummins.

My truck is 10 years old and because it's a diesel it needs to be driven (especially the VGT style turbo else the vanes start to stick). I rarely drive it now because I have a corporate paid lease vehicle (actually a Dodge Grand Caravan), why buy diesel for daily driving when you get free fuel for your other paid-for ride?

The diesel is in good shape, but I've decided to get a gasser instead. The diesel pulls my boat just fine. It's a 6.0L that's had a few upgrades (somewhat normal 6.0L stuff). It's not as sought after as the ones you mentioned. It's just time for a new truck. I don't plan on selling the Ford, but trading it in.

My question was concerning the pros/cons of the Ram 2500 Hemi 5.7L 2012 or so. I've read it searches a bit for the proper gear when towing in hills. I was wondering if anyone here has one and what their thoughts are on it.

Yeah the 6.0 has a black eye reputation. Gonna get a beat down trading it or selling it. You might try the texashuntingforum, I know there are a few fellas over there that are running the truck your looking at. Good luck, hard to find good info. Have you tried to find a dodge forum? Bet they have one and you'll prob have better search results.

I have a 1500 ram with 5.7 hemi but have not towed the boat with it yet. It does have a tow/haul selection for transmission which should keep the transmission from hunting for gears on hills.

Can't be sure though.

The 6.0 gets has some design flaws that can be rectified and made into a stout and reliable motor. You can change the turbo or wheel relatively easily. With that many miles on it you won't have any problem selling it outright. My only comment is it seems like a steep investment for a new truck that you wont drive that much vs the one thats paid off. I would think that hemi would do just fine towing a full size boat.

I have a Dodge with a 5.7 Hemi, pulls my Skeeter ZX 250 without issue. Averages about 13 miles to a gallon on the highway.

2011 Ram 1500 4x4 Hemi.
pulls the loaded down Triton at 80 and gets 11-12 mpg.
i never use the tow/haul mode.
it justs keeps the rpm's up.
the bed of the truck is loaded also and has a fiberglass camper top on it.

I love the smell of 2 stroke in the morning !!!

Unless your having issues with the 6.0 or havent done the egr delete and oil cooler fix I would keep it.

I had an 04 Ram 2500 SLT CCSB 4X4 with the hemi and 4:10 gears. Pulled very well. Most I ever put on it was about 14K lbs. IMHO, its all about gearing.... you have to have enough gear to keep the engine up making enough power so that it doesnt require backshifting all the time...
Don't kill it by adding oversized tires/wheels... With the Powerwagon, you can get 4:56 gearing...

It's had most of the modifications including the EGR delete, but the oil cooler was replaced, not relocated. Relocating the oil cooler is an expensive endeavor. Then you might as well do the head studs, another expensive endeavor. You can easily drop 8 to 10K doing all those things, and you just went from a 15K dollar truck to a 15.5K dollar truck.

I wouldn't keep a truck till it starts having issues. That leaves you with the option of repairing the issues or taking a hit on your sale/trade. I will trade it now and get the most I can from it, not look back and tell Ford to KMA on any diesel they ever offer again.

I've considered a Cummins, but the new ones are about as bad with the emissions filters that clog if you don't run the hell out of them constantly.
