Thanks for the help everybody, I always appreciate the TFF community - quick to help and not that many trolls!
Anyone around the DFW area willing to meet up this weekend and switch head units? My "home" lakes are Ray Hubbard and Lavon, I'll buy breakfast or lunch!
Edit: Forgot to mention that I had already restored defaults and re-installed software. That was actually one of the first things I did. I did not actually roll-back to a previous version of the software though.

I am going to install previous version of the software. I am using a three way cable and it was recommended that I bypass it, but I would like to check the head unit before I have to crawl under the console and disconnet the pigtail. As I said previously, I don't know of anyone with a 998 to test my head unit.
Like sloveless, I am open to buying breakfast or lunch (or bait!)for someone that would be willing to meet me this weekend and check my head unit (assuming the weather cooperates).
My home lake is Benbrook, but I also go to Eagle Mountain, and am willing to go to Arlington, Joe Pool, or Grapevine.
PM me if you are willing to help out. Thanks in advance.

It doesnt have to be another 998 it can be a 1198,898,or a 798 I believe just have to plug the wires in individualy and not in the collector.

Richard .. I have 998c SI in my boat and live in Arlington. We can probably meet up sometime if you want to hook your head unit upto my transducer .. since we both have 998s won't have to mess with the collector at all.
PMing you my cell.

So I went over to L. Lewisville and Deil came out to give me a hand. My head unit with his transducer looks amazing! Picture perfect w/ no weak signal on the right side. Forgot to upload pics at home, but no problem with his 'ducer. Went back to exact same spot afterwards with my transducer and same old story, right side almost black.
Call H-bird and there is a new transucer being shipped to me, great customer service! When I get out on the water to test the new sonar I will give an update again.
Thanks to Diel for coming all the way out to the lake and putting his (gorgeous) boat in the water for a 5 min switch! He's good people.

I had the same results with Rob (MtnDew) on Satuday.
I must have got the wrong help desk person because I have to send in my transducer for them to check LOL. That's all right though, at least I'm getting smething done! Probably about a weekend turnaround.
Amazing how many people on this forum are willing to take time to help out. Thanks Rob.

I went thru the same issue, i bought a 998 back in December and my right side was dark, turns out it was a bad transducer, for what these things cost you would think Humminbird would do a better job at quality control!!!
