Heading to Caddo in May and want to try frogs. In a recent video, I saw a guy cast the frog out into the lilly pads.

So, is that what you do? Just cast into the pads? how do you retrieve a frog?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Twitch , twitch, then rest. Walk it across the pads and fall into holes. Pull off the sides of the pads. Throw it up in there and walk it out. Sometimes they will bust through or onto the pad. Fun way to fish.

Order a diver frog from River2seaUSA and it does most of the work for you. You can also watch their videos.

65-80lb braid 7'+ hev or ex heavy rod high speed reel. Cast it in pads, cat tails, under docks, tree limbs and around/in any grass. There are several ways to fish a frog so you need to see how they want it first. I try fast erratic retrieves at first then ill throw in a pause if that don't work ill do a twitch twitch pause. Pay attention to the surrounding birds and bait fish also. If there are white or black birds around ill throw a white or black frog. A good all around is of course a natural frog I personally throw spro frogs but they're are a lot of good brands out there. When you get the blow up don't set the hook till about 2 seconds then cross the eyes.

Buy a Bobby Barrack Perfect Frog. Crawl the frog off the bank with 65 lb power pro. You will want a long rod 7'6" to 7'11" to be effective. There are a ton of videos on utube that will give you a pretty good idea how to work a frog on mat. A helpful tip would be to slightly tweek out the hook points with a pair of pliers.

Braid is great for a lot of techniques but it is absolutely the best line for frogs -- a must imo.

All the above mentioned retrieves are useful and I'll add another. Let the frog sit completely still for several seconds. even a minute. Then shake your rod with no slack so the frog starts to quiver. This works especially well when the water is still. The vibration in the water seems to be too much for fish that were otherwise content on just watching.

Also, don't give up too quickly with frogs. Many times I've not had any action and then all of a sudden they turn on.

And as mentioned, one of the hardest things to do is not to set the hook as soon as you see a bite. You've got to give the fish time to start to swallow it or you'll likely yank it out of its mouth.

When I was in school in Florida, we used to just throw them in the pads and reel them back like a buzz bait. So much fun when you can see them coming to smash it! Always liked the zoom frogs best in the thick stuff, the legs are more streamlined and don't have boot tails on them, seemed to make them come through more uninterrupted.

cast a frog out, twitch it, set pole down, start eating sandwich, get a blow up, finish sandwich, set hook. wink

seriously easier to fish too fast than too slow, also don't set the hook fast as said. count to 2 or 3...
