I currently use right handed (BC) reels and cast with my right hand. Then I have to switch the rod to my left hand when reeling. When using spinning gear, I cast with my right but don't have to switch the rod to my other hand because I reel on the left side. The only time I really notice it is when I am flipping, it almost seems like I need a left handed reel for flipping so I don't have to constantly switch the rod to my left hand. Just curious to see if this is normal or if I'm the only wierdo out there.
Just gotta keep on livin man, L.I.V.I.N!

I only fish left hand retrieve reels and cast right handed.
I know there are some older left hand retrieve daiwa flipping/pitching reels with the spool release on top that are made for what you are asking. I have a few actually and they work well for me but were designed for the application you described.

I grew up throw spinning reels with a left hand retrieve. When I moved over to bait casters I bought the south paw models. I seems very natural to me.

I transitioned over from right to left. Best fishing decision I ever made.
You know the old saying
If it floats, flys, or f___s it is always cheaper to rent!
You have to decide which is more important.

After 35+ years of using right-handed baitcasters I decided to trade off some of my older reels and picked up a Curado 201 BSF. It hasn't been an easy switch! Still working at it. If I devoted a month to the reel I might get used to it! After the spawn though.

I only use left hand reels because I grew up setting the hook with my right arm and can not do it the other way around.

I'd say go with whatever feel natural for you. Not everyone is the same so it's best to try it out for yourself and see what feels best. In my case reeling with my left hand feels ridiculously unnatural(again this is for me).. Ive tried it for a lil while witha spinning setup and just couldnt do it. Im used to setting the hook with the left hand and holding the rod with that same hand. It also takes less than a second after i cast to have the reel in my left and and am ready to set the hook.

In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

I tried it last year but had to switch back b/c I couldnt get the hook set down Me too but I overcame it when I realized I was not bending my elbow when setting the hook. Try seeing how you set the hook with your left hand and then with your right. You will probably notice a difference. At least I did. I've been fishing lefty since the 90's. Back then there was usually one or two left handed reels per brand and none were the best reels. No Team Daiwa lefty's and no Shimano Chronarch with left hand retrieve. The first time Daiwa came out with one in a high quality reel it looked like they had jury rigged a right handed reel to make it a lefty. It stunk but was usable. Today I use both equally well. I mostly use my right handed reels for crankbaits and C rigs.

I am left handed and cast with my left hand and reel with my right... This is the way we were mean't to fish.
Switching hands slows the process and is more likely to cause a lost fish in the whole hand switching process when fish are hitting on or near the surface.
But each person has to find out what feels right to them and fish it.

I was taught to cast with my right hand, then go straight to the handle with the other hand. Don't have time for switching hands.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I tried a lefty reel this weekend & it felt awesome! I can't believe I have been fishing with the wrong hand all this time. When I started fishing roughly 10 years ago, all I had were some old hand me down abu's from my g-paw, so I just went with what I had. Looks like I will be switching all my reels to left handed reels.
Just gotta keep on livin man, L.I.V.I.N!
