If you notice, most people who talk about CPR of catfish dont say anything about changing the laws. The few who bash us for bringing up CPR are the ones who cry about changing the laws. I am not a guide but still have changed alot of peoples minds about keeping bigger fish. The catfish community can pretty well take care of its own if more education on the subject gets out. most people nowadays do not count on fish as a staple of their diet so there is no real reason for them to keep every fish they catch and will agree with CPR if introduced to them in a civil manner. Even the petition got blown up about changing the laws when if you actually read it, it only calls for people to show they are interested in growing a trophy catfish program and would like the TPWD to actually do some studies on what would be the best way to go about it. JMHO tom is right. Most of us on here that practice cpr have learend it from someone on this forum.

In the next 20 years, most people who learn to fish for trophy blues will learn to do so on the internet. Thats the way of the future. Everybody learns everything online. The few guys on here who dont believe in cpr are they guys who have spent their whole life fishing for blues, and are set in their ways, and thats ok, just how they were raised. But everyday new peolle join this forum and get introduced to the idea of cpr. We will eventually be in the majority, but it will take some time thats for sure. Just my 2 cents.

Fair enough Kat man,
I never meant to imply that any limit or slot restriction should be imposed lightly or summarily, what I am saying is get TPWD over to do a legitiamte professional study, and put forth reasonable laws if they are needed.
I just want to see the big cat fishery last a long long time. It seems like just good sense. I think the general consensus is that our fishery should last a long time. I don't know of anyone who wants to see it go away. The OP was about trying to cultivate trophy channel catfish by imposing regulations on their size limits. My post was addressing the tendency to call for new laws just to get a result that makes person A happier about their fishing trip. Example: Person A wants to catch bigger fish so Person A calls for laws to make that happen. Instead, laws should be about keeping a healthy fishery through addressing discovered problem areas. That's all I am saying.

Why not just impose a moratorium on all fishing for the next 20 years. Then all the catfish will be trophies and we can all be happy... Oh wait. That's not how nature works.

Apparently on Lake Worth it is. There were no trophy blues before the ban. It was a channel cat and flathead lake. The all tackle record was 22lbs for blues in 1998. Ban goes into effect and its a trashy ghost town lake for almost 10 years. 2005 new record was at 55 lbs. Next thing you know it's consistently pumping out 30#+ cats. Last year alone I know off 8 cats that were bigger than the previous record of 55. The record is now 74-75 lbs. and no there is NOT a ton of catfish on that lake.

That's all I am saying. Yeah I'm agreeing with you. Don't make laws just to make laws, or to make folks feel good. I would like to see studies to make sure there isn't a problem, and if there is, to develop a fair, sane way to del with it.

In my opinion the cats under 5 lbs should be released to reach spawning maturity and cats over 10 released for continued growth. Any species!
