I bought one a couple of months ago. It casts fine, but three or four times now when I've set the hook the butt of my hand has pushed the release button on the left side of it. Both the side of the reel and the spool have fallen off and onto the front deck. Luckily so far neither has fallen over the side of the boat.

I started to return it last night, but when I looked at their demo unit I noticed it did the same thing. Apparently that's just the way they are made.

Anyone else have this problem?

Had a buddy fishing with me this past weekend and it happened twice...Needless to say it's in the lake.

I have 5 and have been using then for over a year. Never happened once.

Then again, I don't set the hook very often.

I had two of them and loved them then one did this on Fork and I lost the spool in the lake. The other one has never done it and I still use it a lot.

Maybe it's just the way I hold the reel. I may take it back for credit on a different brand or model. I'm happy with the way the reel performs based on how much I paid, but having the spool fall out while trying to land a fish during a tournament would be no bueno.

I have one that I fish a spinner bait on and I have never had a problem. I have small hands and I can not reach the spool release button.

My issues was between the car ride to the lake, and rolling on plane to get to our spot, had it come off first cast. Took it back to the store and got another, now I check before casting.

I have over 25 and so far not a one has had this happen. In fact I have a few I have problems with getting the side plate OFF!
Take it back and exchange it. Best thing about them!

I have had the release button do the same thing but they have never come apart though. I just figured I was holding them wrong.

Academy will warrant/replace reel(in Temple, TX) if you have issues.
