Hey guys,

I am headed out to explore a new river this weekend. I am going to hit up the Neches above Lake Palestine.

Should I take my kayak or just plan on wade/bank fishing?

This water is new to me so any fly tips or other comments would be greatly appreciated. I am going site unseen.

Anywhere to camp?

I am hoping to find some sandies.

I will post a report when I return.

You will understand the term "combat fishing" after a weekend day on the Neches.

Bring the yak. Go way upstream and avoid the masses. Would be much better if it was flowing.

We have been walking the banks of the Neches just East of Chandler for years. It gets busy but if you hike a mile or so back you lose most folks. I see a lot of boats and right now the current is pretty slow so Kayak would be fine. Be aware that there is a very large treefall about 1 mile upriver. You can portage around it fairly easily if your boat isn't too heavy. We generally do pretty well with pink jig heads and chartreuse skirts dragged slowly along the bottom.
