Fishing a club tournament on Oak Creek Lake about 15 years ago, all is ready to move to a new spot and motor won't start. After an hour or so with the cowling off checking everything including pulling spark plugs, I got up to move and the kill switch lanyard hung on the cowling. Put it back in place and started right up. DUH! Now if I hit the switch and the motor don't start the kill switch is the FIRST thing checked.

went fishing with some friends and had the onboard cooler full of ice and sodas...- finished and drove home putting the boat into the garage..the ice melts and the cooler drains into the hull......Next week I go out and raise the hitch to put the boat onto my truck and the auto bilge pump goes off shooting water onto my work bench, fastener assortments and tools....scientifically, it could not have been planned better to hit more stuff to damage or rust......spent hours drying off everything and repairing damaged items

I've caught an old browning bait caster combo, beer can, and half of a rusted wheelchair!

I've caught an old browning bait caster combo, beer can, and half of a rusted wheelchair! I wonder if that comination was all being used at the same time and if there is a reason for the 1/2 wheelchair. Scary thought.

Things I've done at least once:
Forgot to put the plug in.ONCE Left the transom saver connected and damaged prop. NEVER Forgot to lift the trolling motor before taking off. ONCE (And lost my TM prop in the process) Backed my boat in too fast while unhooked and had to swim after it. ONCE Got the the lake and realized that I forgot all of my rods. NEVER (But did forget the boat keys once) Spent 30 minutes trying to figure out why my boat would start and the kill switch was off. ONCE (But it was more like an hour for me!)

How about bank fishing a lake with low water conditions and i come across a little ditch that i decide to jump instead of go around. There happens to be a coiled up cottonmouth in the mud next to the grass that I'm gonna jack with also.I jump, clear the water and sink waist deep in the mud 6ft from the snake. It doesn't move and I can't either.Anyway,I calm down and realize I'm gonna need some pros to get outta this."hello 911,I'm stuck,no not my truck,my body and a cottonmouth are getting awful personal here,i am not sinking but I can't move".10 minutes later the VFD and half the town shows up for the rescue. Turns out the snake was dead.Soooo embarrased.I told them they could laugh if they wanted to,and they did.Loser for sure that day

After reading thru this thread I feel like such an amateur... All I've managed to do so far (knock on wood) is, after padlocking the hitch on the truck, leaving the keys on the bumper. It's about 30 miles to the lake we were fishing that day. Get to the lake, load the boat, back down the ramp, climb in to power off the trailer and no keys. S l o w drive home looking for keys in the road or barditch. See small red thing, think that's the floating thingie, stop to retrieve it and trooper pulls up and writes me a warning for stopping on the highway ("But officer, if I pull completely off the road I'll sink the truck and boat up to the axles and have to call a tow." "Not my problem. Now get moving or pull off the road. Here's your citation.") Found the keys in the middle of the road a couple miles from the house.
Fishing, a man knows a serenity of soul and peace of mind that he finds in doing nothing else, and it makes no difference whether or not he catches anything. The mind of a true fisherman is not on petty subjects.

I didn't do it, but the best I have heard of is right after my friend got his new Phoenix, he took his dad fishing. He took off the tow strap on one side, and trusted his dad to take the other off. His dad forgot, lowered the boat in the water, and then pulled the boat backwards, up the ramp by the strap

Not exactly something I did, but I was a part of it.. A buddy of mine took me fishing and his dad dropped us off at the lake. Well we get to fish for awhile, and saw lightning coming our way off in the distance.. We decide the smart thing to do is to call his dad to come get us. In the process of loading the boat, we hear a loud "POW" and the truck starts rolling down the ramp (keep in mind, we are in the boat, strapped to the trailer). Long story short, we managed to jump in and cut the boat free before they lost that too!
Learned a couple things that day.
1. Emergency brakes are for using 2. You wouldn't believe how far under water you can still see super duty lights
Bad day on the water, but no one was hurt thank god!

Done the drain plug a few times, trolling motor down before. I've cast and hooked a rod behind me only to watch my fiance's pole fly about 20 yards from the boat. Dumbest thing I ever did was play chicken with a crane (the bird type). It looked like slow motion as he was flying perpendicular to me. Going about 60 mph, I perfectly centered that bird on the front of my boat. I didn't know birds can scream, but they can, I heard it as I ducked down and avoided getting my neck broken by that giant bird. There was beak, blood and guts all over the front end of my boat and me needing to change pants......
