I am planning on driving up from San Marcos and making a run at The Steps..Ive never been out there before. Is there any special advice or directions I should know about? Is there live minnows for sale anywhere within the vicinity? Thanks in advance for any help

Daniel

My advice would be to go somewhere you are going to catch fish. It wont be at the steps. You'll probably have much better luck at newmans bottom. Distance about the same.

Ive been bank fishing granger for years while growing up in austin. It all depends on if the fish are making their run yet, if so it is pretty simple to pull out a stringer of 10 whites from the steps. Ive never limited out there but ive come close a few times. I have limited out at newmans bottom before but this year yegua is looking a little low and granger is full so the chances of a good run are better at granger than at somerville. Also Karr, asking locals where to fish and for fishing reports from granger is kinda like asking the CIA for a list of their current operations,it aint gonna happen or you aint gonna get truthful information. Locals go to absurd lengths to keep their lake to themselves.

thanks bobcatfisher, I didnt realize I was a liar. The steps used to be a good place to go.....about 10 years ago, but these days it looks like the home depot parkinglot. I thought I was giving him good advice to help him save his gas. Didnt realize I was just lying to him.

Nah, i havent been there yet this year since im in san marcos for school. I fully agree that due to the amount of people the steps are more trouble than theyre worth on weekends but on weekdays going in the morning and leaving before 4pm is best. My advice is hike towards the mouth until you find a nice bend or deeper pool free from the crowds to fish

Went saturday about 0730-1030 managed all of 1 and lost 2. Went back around 1300-1530 and a few people with a 3-4 on stringers but not much action. Most of those were making a day of it so the bite is real slow.

I fished there the last 5-6 years on good runs and have seen almost everyone with good stringers. I might go this weekend to see if the run is in full effect yet. if it is ill make a posting here

Hello. I'm new to fishing for whites. I live in Lockhart which is about 30 miles south'ish from Austin. I was wondering if anybody had an address to the steps so I can mapquest it and find out how to get there? Thanks. Lake Travis is closer to me, but I haven't been there either. I've heard the whites are real good there if you know where to fish during the spawn right now. Thanks. Any info and help will be greatly appreciated. Thank y'all.
