The ol' lady got her first gar on Granger today on a homemade rope lure! Never thought we'd be this excited about landing a "garbage fish!" She was able to release it back into the water as healthy as an ox. Great way to celebrate Texas Independence Day! First Gar!

Thanks ScottEvil. Funny story: I was out there a couple weeks ago trying to reel one in to show my young kids when a fellow angler across the bank from me hooked one. He pulled it in and mumbled to himself in disappointment as he cut the line. I yelled over to him "Is that a gar?" He looked P.O.'d and nodded. I said, "man that's awesome!"
Guy gave me the most perplexed look, like who is this idiot who's pumped about catching gar? Hahaha. I'll never forget that expression he gave me.

Nice catch Fish aint bad either
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

I've heard from quite a few people that the meat is actually really good( not the trophy gar) the hardest part is cleaning um cause of their thick scales. I have yet to catch a gar but they are my next target come warmer weather lol
Its not about how deep you can fish but by how you wiggle your worm

Have any tips for catching gar besides the rope method? I've been trying to hook into some from my kayak for some GoPro footage but failed. They splash at the top nonstop around 9 AM in Marshall Creek so I know they're there, but they weren't interested in live minnows under a bobber. Literally splashing the surface on top of my bobber but not hitting it.

Aggieyak09, I've had good success on live minnows and the last time I hooked one was on just that. Like MxRacer said, 2 ft below the bobber. Let the gar take it and chew it for a while as you'll need a lot of luck setting that hook.
