I wonder if you could get a consistent "head stand" out of a streamer by using a 90 degree jig hook with Clouser eyes tied before the jig bend, next to the hook eye. If you combined that with some foam on the dangly bits on the south end of the streamer things could get interesting...

As is my usual practice, I just can't leave well enough alone. I was going to take a picture to illustrate where I was talking about tying the eyes on the 90 degree jig hook, but I decided to go ahead and tie a really hideous proof of concept. BEHOLD, THE KICKSTAND CRAWFISH! Profile - This picture really illustrates how I tied the eyes onto the hook between the hook eye and the 90 degree jig bend, not behind it as we normally would on a Clouser or Spinster. The location of the eyes should result in it landing in this posture after a quick strip.  Front View  Oblique  It certainly won't be very weedless without a hook guard of some kind, but on sandy or rocky bottoms I think it could be a simple to tie, fairly easy to cast shakey head imitator. I used hackle feathers for the claws, but a couple of rabbit strips, or some chamois, either with a bit of foam at the wavy end, could be a really interesting way to give it a bit more action. Some hackle down the body probably wouldn't hurt either, but it's late and I was in a hurry. The legs are on there because...well because rubber skirt, that's why. Thoughts?

George, you've hit upon one of the main reasons I started this thread: you more seasoned citizens have tried lots of things over the years that those of us who are newer to the sport have never even considered. The more of that kind of thing we can shake loose from each others' minds, the better off we'll all be. It doesn't surprise me one bit that someone else has done this. It surprises me even less that the Dean of the Jig Hook Streamer was one of those people.  So how different is the action when the eyes are tied in front of the jig bend versus the normal, more-Clouserish location? I'm interested to see how these look in the water. Maybe since the wind won't be causing four foot rollers at Sooper Seekrit Stockpond #7 this weekend I can sneak out there for some R&D testing. Kickstand Clouser

Dusty, you place the eyes or lead wire on jig hooks depending upon what you want the action of fly to do.....as you demonstrated.
Hook selection is important as well -

I'm not a bed fisherman (it's usually too crowded and too windy), but it seems like this would be a pretty potent class of streamers with regard to drawing an angry sow-bass into striking. I still haven't had a chance to get on the water to test either of these patterns, but I'm hoping this weekend might do the trick. Please notice that I have not begun to hold my breath. I moved these photos in my photobucket account and it wouldn't let me edit a post any earlier than this one. Here are the pictures that won't show up above for the Kick Stand Crawfish.    tbates, did we find you a solution to your problem? What's the next challenge?!?

Baby duck fly.... or any baby bird for that matter. Large bodied feathery fly that holds shape when wet while light enough to cast on an 8 wt rig. It will be baby bird season soon, and a nice tasty duckling thrashing about will draw in a big bass. Here is my prototype, double size 2 hooks on the legs, the fly is jointed (hooks joined with 25lb mono)  Good Luck! BHR

Yes, and not a bird..... I have caught a bird on a fish pattern though, if that makes any sense. Right there in Richardson I caught an Egret that ate a small sunfish stuck to the end of my 4 wt TFO, the Sunny ate a small pheasant tail fly. Had to cut the leader and let the Egret go....
Also caught a seagull that ate a minnow I casted at Leech Lake in Minnesota when I was a kid..... Think I'll tie up a flying fish pattern next!
