Okay, it is a new year and I need to re-stock on my shad type slabs. I am looking for great prices on slab sytle slabs. The last time I stocked up on that style was a couple years ago and I got them for $.79 a piece buying in bulk (TNT had them adverstised for $.99 each). Last year I was running low and had to buy the Wahoo brand from Academy for about $1.50 each. This year they have gone up to $1.89 each, WOW! Link: http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores...hoo&Ntk=AllI looked around some of the local suppliers but, the two places that I found them (RSR and TNT) want $3.00 for them. I don't doubt that they are quality made, but I just can't see myself paying that much money for a slab. Kind of like not buying a BMW when a Ford will get me to work! Some people like driving the more expensive cars/trucks like some people like to buy more expensive tackle, not putting them down, it is just not my style. I understand there is a market for both inexpensive and expensive items, and good luck to everyone on their business. I don't want this to become a thread of people bashing other people's product and I don't mean to do the same. (I had to reference a few companies, so people wouldn't get on here and say to go to so and so's site to buy....I have already went there and they are too expensive for me). I just want to know if anyone knows where I can get the Shad type slab for less than what I am paying now. I am really looking for something at $1 or less as this is what I currently pay for all the other type of slabs I use. Thanks

Have you thought about buying a mold? If you have the time you can get the satisfaction of building your own for around 35 cents a piece. Most of the supplies needed could be purchased at Barlows in Richardson.

I won't mess with melting lead......a little dangerous without very expensive safety equipment. So is driving down the road. Don't get the lead too hot. Have good ventilation. Wash your hands before smoking, eating, drinking or touching your body.

Most of the supplies needed could be purchased at Barlows in Richardson. That is what I have been doing for 25 years. It is not about saving money though. It is a very enjoyable pastime and also you can paint them any color you desire. Look me up on the lake and I will give you a couple.

I would think that if you were to call some of these local slab makers (RSR &/or TNT) and ask for a one color slab, disassembled, they would probably give you a pretty good price. All you would need to do is attached the hook and split ring. Knock out their hook and get you one of those cheap china hooks that bend easy and you can maybe cut your price down some more.
Just a thought.

Holzer, you are absolutley right. I sent Philip a PM at RSR wanting just slabs and nothing else and he gave me a great price. Philip said he can do anything you want and proved it to me. He probably has just about every mold ever made with some he doesn't have listed on his website. As DTA said there is a satisfaction that comes from painting them yourself and can definitely save some money. He sent me loads of free samples of multiple styles and and sizes to try out in addition to what I ordered. He poured them all the day after I ordered and had them in the mail. Awesome customer service as has already been stated on the forum. Here are a few from Philip after I put on the paint and hooks, all coming in less than a dollar a piece.

Holzer, I already have hobbies that take up my time and I am not looking for new ones at this time. I can buy several types of slabs from Moestackleshop with a good hook and split rings that are already assembled for right at a buck and sometimes under (during a sale or when I buy in bulk). I am looking for the same type of deal with the shad type slabs. I don't own or associated with any lure dealer, so I don't care who I buy from......I am just looking for a better deal that what I have found as the lowest cost provider of shad type slabs (Academy for $1.89 each). If a deal doesn't exist, I will continue to buy these type of slabs from Academy. I just thought I would give this forum a shot first.

I understand peoples enjoyment from making their own lures. I have similar hobbies such as reloading my own ammo. I am just not looking for something I have to paint or put hooks on or split rings on. Thanks for the replies.

Hey ATM... Like those hooks on the slim slabs... Great look to those...
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach
