I'm new to these forums but by perusing the threads it is clear to me that the people here know what they're talking about!
In about 2 weeks I plan on heading down to Corpus Christi with my girlfriend for a day or two of fishing. Problem is, I'm only really familiarized with the Galveston and Bolivar areas. I've done some research and it seems like bringing fishbites and purchasing dead shrimp are a great way to catch pompano, whiting, and black drum off of Bob Hall pier currently. I have 2 medium action fishing poles and I plan on using them like this. I also have a heavy action fishing pole with 30lb mono line on it that I would like to cast out for something bigger like a bull red or a king mack.
My question is, what bait do the people of TTF suggest I use on my heavy action rod. Are king macks a possibility in the spring? Any and all opinions/advice are greatly appreciated.

Use something alive (mullet/piggy perch/not a hardhead) on the big pole and make sure you have a good wire leader so your king doesn't chew through. On the little poles, you should get some customers on the fish bites, or fresh dead shrimp. Fish hang around under the pier, so you don't have to cast super far away. Good luck and post some pictures when you get done.

If your gonna do Kings I suggest using a slide line and catch your bait at the end of the pier on the left side using a sabiki rig. Catching your own costs a heck of a lot less than buying it. Also, you are using what they are feeding on.

Thanks for the responses I appreciate it. Sounds like king macks will be around the pier so hopefully I'll be catching my first one.
Does anyone have a good guide/video on how to rig a "slide line" as fishernoob mentioned?

If I'm not mistaken, I believe a slide line is: You take a heavy weight on you big rod and throw it as far as you can. You connect your other line to it (maybe a paper clip would work) and slide it out. I may be completely wrong, but it is something to that effect.

JimRinTX is correct. To connect the lines use one of these they are easy to make. I use wire for hanging pictures to make mine. And connect it like so...

I am taking the kids (4 & 6 yrs old) down to CC for a couple of days for Spring break. I bought them a couple of cheap crab nets. Figured that would be a little more entertaining for them to handle while I let them reel in some fish from my rod. Having never been down to Bob Hall pier, is this a good spot for this activity. Mainly just there for them to have some fun. They love wildlife. If this is not the best idea, please share.
Usually wade fishing in POC. I have never claimed to know what I am talking about....

That would be a pretty big bummer if crab traps aren't allowed. I usually put one out while fishing as a nice side dish for whatever I catch.
Can anyone confirm/deny this?

You may want to try the pier at "Charlies Pasture". It is in Port A. If you take the road behind the Velero station just before you get to the ferry, it will take you to it. I've caught some good trout there, and you can use the crab traps.

it is a little early for the crabs! Good Luck, you might try the bays behind the ferry, Port A and Aransas?

A sabiki rig is what is used to catch live bait on the pier when using a net is a pain or your not good at it...you can also avoid the net charge. Here is what a Sabiki rig is:
