Hello everyone, I was just wondering what are some good places to fish in the Galveston Island area besides the two piers and the north and south jetties? I fished an area off of 61st street and noticed that it was very deep and my girlfriend and I managed to bring in a couple of pretty large sand trout.

What are you fishin for? Once the water warms up in the summer, you can catch all the trout you want just wading off the beach. I like to head down to the west end or surfside area to get away from the crowds. Hit it on a day when the water is flat and green and you can limit out in less than an hour. Best of all you don't have to deal with all the people that a pier usually attracts or crowds. Nothing like a morning wade in the surf.

Thanks, yeah i've been to rollover pass a couple of times. Haven't tried wading too much I should try it. I should have specified fishing for mostly trout. You use live shrimp when wading?

Most of the time I'll use live shrimp. On a calm flat day top waters work great. I know guys who will exclusively throw plastics and spoons when wading the surf.

Or bring a cast net and catch some bait. Finger sized mullet work great and so will shad (pogies) when they are in the surf. In the summer months when the water is clear, you could fill an ice chest with shrimp by throwing a cast net if the conditions are just right. I never hit the beach without a cast net.

Jean is right about Roll Over. He catches a lot of fish there. If the surf is too rough to wade, roll over is a great place to go. I'd fish roll over more often, but I love wading off the beach. If you're going to roll over on a weekend get there early!

Texas City Dike or Sky Line Dr. are 2 good places to fish. Sky Line Dr is the road that is on the levee just before you go over onto the Dike. Great wade fishing area and will get really good from April on. Watch for slicks!!!!! San Luis Pass is another good area. Being new to wading don't wade anywhere near the pass itself. Dangerous currents here. Wade on the back side (bay) on the galveston side of the pass. Less dangerous here and plenty of Trout starting mid March. Topwater bite will be on!!!!! Other places you can wade are Sea Wolf Park, the surf, Sportsman Rd, Seabrook Flats, the Lagoon in Seabrook, Galveston Lagoon located on the east end of the seawall.

awesome suggestions everyone. anyone ever try the bolivor pocket? ive heard of it, not sure where it is. seems to be a great place for some flounder. And when when wade fishing from the surf, would you say you have to get alot of distance on your casts?

When wade fishing from the surf I catch most of my fish in the wade gut or the 1st gut. I hardly ever go further than that. It is a natural tenancy to think the further out you go the more fish you will catch, but i've caught most of my fish closer it. Sharks and bull reds are the only ones that I go out further for, but they also can be caught close in. This isn't my picture, but it is a really good visual. The guts are the places where the water gets deeper. Sometimes its just very slight. The bars are where the water gets shallower you will usually see the waves breaking on the bars. I catch most of my fish (trout, mackeral, reds, black drum, sheepshead, whiting, jacks, gafftop) fishing from the beach into the wade gut or wading on the first bar and fishing the wade gut or the 1st gut. Here is another good visual showing the satellite image. You can see the bars by where the waves are breaking. The distances he's talking about in these pictures are for shark fishing purposes.

wow, I always thought you have to wade out real far to catch anything.. I guess the conditions of the surf are key.

That's what I thought too when I started surf fishing. Once I learned to read the surf, I realized that fish can be caught very close in. Conditions do make a huge difference, but don't let that stop you from fishing. I've caught lots of fish in the surf when the water looked like chocolate milk, but if you can catch it on a day where the water is nice and green, flat and has good visibility you'll have a day you won't ever forget.
If you want to come on a shark fishing trip and learn some stuff sometime, send me a PM and we can try to set something up for this summer.
