Any one know what lake that was on? Otay is my guess. Either way, that's an incredible fish!

We may have huge bass in So Cal due to the trout stocked in our lakes, but what a lot of people don't realize is how bad the fishing pressure is. That's why finesse fishing and drop shotting is so popular, its a little tougher to get bit IMO. I can guarantee a TON of time and effort went into fishing the big baits to get that one bite. Congrats Mike!

This is not correct from what I know (have been told). It was caught on a prototype but I am not allowed to say. It was not one of mine either. No not a bed fish. That should start here pretty soon though

Do you know this for a fact, or are you guessing?

And there we have it. Don't want to stir up drama, but when I see what looks like a shameless plug for a company whose baits don't seem to have a reputation for catching big bass, I'm going to call it out. Hate to be frank, but I'm just allergic to bull$hit.

Mike Gilbert is one of the best swimbait guys I have had the good fortune of knowing. There are probably better sticks out there, but he is one of the few willing to help noobs like me. It's not fair to use his achievement and dedication to plug a bait the fish was not caught on.

P.S.

P.P.S. Matt already posted the link while I was typing.

some more from a new article:

"...When asked about the catch, Gilbert said "I didn't know I had a teen fish [on] until she was in the net, the fight was over in 15-20 seconds and there wasn't really time to think about it." As with most giant bass catches, he was blessed with a little luck during the fight, "when I went to net her she came up really quick and thrashed just as she flopped into the net and the bait shot up into the air, I lucked out on that."

Gilbert weighed the fish on a handheld scale, and while admittedly trembling while weighing this monster, the fish may have been even heavier than 17.45. As with many modern big bass anglers, Gilbert was fishing with a camera recording the action. After looking at the scale, he turned it and the fish toward the camera to document the weight. When he got home to review the footage, he noticed the scale was settled on over 18 pounds while directed at the camera. ..."
