Ugly sticks are really good foods and you can't go wrong with a 6500c3.

I have used Abus all my life. Grew up fishing Amistad for cats and stripers and we used the same rigs. Ugly sticks and 5000,5500 and some 6500 ambasedors.

I may get laughed off the board but WalMart sells a Shakspere spinning combo for $19.99. The rod is 7ft. MH the reel is ok to start. My buddy has landed many fish in the 10 lb. range. he has been using them for 8yrs. and still going. I put AG 5600s on mine and they are great. Replaced the rods with Ugly Stick Catfish rods 7 ft. MH and cant tell the difference. anyway they are not bad to get someone started. Charlie

I like the 7ft sticks that you can get at wal mart or academy. Nice long but for leverage and you can garcia reel at walmart to.

Charlie I think that a rod that has some back bone and a reel that has a good drag and some 8 + pound line can land just about any fish if it is hooked good and played well. Not Salt water fish. I watch fisherman catch fish and crank and yank on the pole and well lose them. Enjoy the fight play the fish if its a big one enjoy the fight more. Work the fish he or she will tire out. Now some fish will run for the brush so at first you may have to crank fast and pull it out of that. Hit or miss at this point. I have never spent more then $100.00 on any rig..........
