i just moved to san antonio area in the past few weeks from the port isabel. have fished nueces river for many many years for white bass but seems that river has pretty much dried up. where does one launch a boat and how far upriver do the white bass spawn on canyon lake? I would recommend launching at Potter's Creek park which is off 306 on the north side of the lake. That puts you at the upper end of the lake near the mouth of the river. You can troll you're way into the river and usually locate fish that are staging this time of year and some that are already working their way up river. The lake is down so watch for stumps and stay in the main channel but you should locate some fish. Troll anything that looks like a shad. Shad Raps or black/chrome, blue/chrome rattletraps usually work pretty well.

thanks jimbo. fresh water fishing, other than nueces river, is a whole new experience for me. lived and fished lower laguna madra for 37 years and pretty much knew the flats and potholes.

I'm the same way as you are about salt water. It just never appealed to me, and not knowing my way around down there kind of helped it along I guess.

I would say yes as that launch was useable even when the lake was much lower than it is now. Once you launch stay in the channel if you head upriver. It curves a lot and one minute you might be in deep water and then in just a few inches so keep an eye on you're graph.

Craine's Mill park is the point of land that separates the river from the main lake. Coming from the lake you make the wide left turn and around the point which is Craine's Mill Park, and then you are entering into the river section that narrows the further into the river you go. That river winds through those canyons like a snake and if you look at a map or watch you're compass you'll understand what I'm saying. Trolling that area and into the actual river should be producing this time of year.

I went out last night to same area that produced last weekend (the river) and only got one small white. Got back to the ramp and some tweaker's had a fire built at the base of the ramp right next to their car. They had a 20lb catfish that they caught off of the ramp. Some interesting people around that area!
I was launching from ramp 8 and it is getting close to the white line. It will be closed in another foot or so.

A fire on the ramp..... crazy. I'd called the sheriff. It is a county ramp.

Dude scrambled to hide something under his car as we pulled up to ramp. He had a backseat full of oranges. Chick sitting up front. Typical late night boat ramp antics I guess. I'm going to wait till the water temp ticks up to 63-65 and the winds tick down to 5-10.
To those who buy minnows Canyon Bait house still has some but I got the impression they may shut down as the owner still has it for sale.
Anyone know another bait shop that is open till 7pm please let me know.

Texas Treasures has a 24 hr bait machine, right on 306 by the dam. It's crazy, that thing dispenses live minnows like a Coke machine and they actually last longer than bait I've gotten anywhere else out there. Check it out. It's pretty cool.
