And I got my butt kicked! I was ill prepared to say the least, I had no anchor, no rod holders, no paddle park, no water proof clothing...I was skiing in the crazy wind on Ray Hubbard with line and poles and paddle going everywhere! the only thing I did right was show up! LOL! Well I just got back from Academy with a 3 lb anchor and a paddle park and a cheap vinyl chest wader. They were out of the Scotty rod holders. Going back at it again tomorrow! I am going to catch a fish tomorrow by golly after church!

By the way, I have a 10' Pescador

Youll find your rhythm. I would suggest fishing creeks and smaller bodies of water until you find your sea legs....so to speak.

I am interested to hear how your 2nd trip goes.

I havent kayaked in years but won a kayak last week and havent taken it out on the water yet. Figured my first trip would be a shake down trip without the fishing gear (maybe a rod or 2 just in case). I think I have learned a lot about what I should be prepared for.

I know the best way to learn what you need is to just get out there and you will figure it out. Hope your 2nd trip goes better than the first!

Fly, I said hi on my way to catch up with my buddy that started off without me. Well we did not spend much time on the south side bc that wind was really kicking our tails and we were not marking any fish. We decided to try the north side of the lake and boy Im glad we did. The wind was not as fierce and the fishing was much better. I would suggest if you go out tomorrow start off on the North side. Feel free to pm me for more details or any info I can help you out with. Have fun and be safe!

First time fishing in the wind out of a kayak and ill equiped is not the best way to get into the sport, and even out of a boat that would have been a disaster.
That is the advantage of kayak fishing, and that is you can launch just about anywhere you can get down to the water. When it's calm you have the entire lake, but when it's windy you have to pick and choose your area to fish more carefully.
More experience at kayak fishing, you will be able to fish anywhere within you're limits.
Find some peaceful water and learn to get the feel of it, and how to rig you're kayak the way you want it, and it might take a few trips to dial it in.
Have fun!

Just one more cast!

I figured I could find you on here! Haha! My yak looked like it had been robbed compared to how rigged out yours is. It was good to talk with you for a min and would like to fish with you sometime. Sending a PM your way.

Great stuff!!! Welcome to the addiction. You may have not been prepaired, but sounds like tons of fun and many lessons learned. Way to go!

Update:

Will my new 3 lb grapple anchor and a slicker suit and a basket on the back I headed back out in the crazy southeast wind on Hubbard down by the dam. I scored my first fish out of a kayak! I got three nice channel cats! That was really really cool!

Way to go man. I just got back from my 5th trip out today and every time I go, I feel more prepared and (thanks to dropping some cash bang) better equipped. Every time I've gone, I've learned 10 new things I could do better, do easier, or watch out for.

Learning it is half the fun for me! Just wait til you start rigging up your boat, that's half the fun too. And catching fish is the other... half... hmmm

Glad you're enjoying it bro. I plan on hitting up Hubbard in the next few weeks, I'd be down to meet up, get into some fish, and maybe pass along a few tips I've picked up.
