I want a kayak that I can use for long trips (5-10 days) and need something to be able to carry the gear. I know they make touring kayaks that are 16+ feet long but I still want a fishing platform. I was thinking about the Native Ultimate 14.5 Solo Angler. Is this the best thing available for carrying alot of gear? I'm guessing this thng doesn't self drain though correct?
I had an OK Trident 13 that I didn't really like...
What do you think?

I guess I should have added that I would be paddling a long way on these trips. 10+miles per day. So that is a factor as well.

Both. I am mainly trying to plan for the Florida Everglades or Florida Keys Paddling trail. Lots of both on these trips.

Hybrid kayak/canoes like the Native Watercraft Ultimate 14.5, Wilderness Systems Commander 140, Nucanoe Frontier, and Malibu Ranger 15 offer you the most access and are very well suited for multiple day trips. You are correct that there's no way for water to exit the kayak unless you bail it out.
For a more traditional fishing platform the Wilderness Systems Ride 135, Ocean Kayak Malibu Pro 2 Tandem, Native Watercraft Slayer 14.5, Malibu Stealth 14, Jackson Big Tuna, and Cobra Fish-n-Dive offer large weight capacities, but limited access to the inside for storing gear.
If you're looking primarily for a kayak to do multi-day trips, I'd lean towards a canoe/kayak hybrid.

Nucanoe is self bailing but not much access below deck. huge front hatch on the new xfactor w/ 4 hatches from factory n a spot for 1 more. Considered a PA 14? Both have a lot of storage below deck n will safely carry 600lbs. Nucanoes paddle well for a big boat IMO

I have considered it. It is just hard o just a $2500 kayak over an $1100 one. Thanks for the suggestions so far. I am going to look at them all.
The main thing about the hybrids is I am worried about taking a swell and not being able to bail the water out in time....

wh2004, I've done up to 5 day trips in the Everglades in my kayak out of Flamingo and some shorter trips out of Chokoloskee. In my opinion as much as I like self bailing kayaks, for hauling gear and supplies for 10 days a good canoe or hybrid kayak (non self bailing) would be better. For a ten day trip you're looking at carrying a minimum of 80 lbs (10 gallons) of drinking water. Even in the touring kayak that I still use as a fishing platform I was loaded to the hilt for a five day, trying to keep everything below deck. With a good working knowledge of gps, getting lost isn't as much a concern as having to delay open water crossings while fully loaded due to mother nature. Your kayak loaded with 100 lbs of gear and water is not going to paddle anything like it did for your average day fish outing. Then there is the problem of raccons getting into your stuff (food and water) if its not fully protected at all times. I haven't looked at the Tarpon 160s in years but the early models had much larger rear hatches than most today, and is a proven fishing platform. When you get closer to going down there get on kayakfishinghole.com and ask around. Its a few oldfartz that have a lot of experience doing the 100 mile trip form Choko to Flamingo. Good Luck and wish I was going.

The slayer has a lot of room and is a sot. I was stronly considering the yak for the same reasons as yoi. But I chose the ride at $300 cheaper.

Try Gerald Kennedy http://www.theoldmansboats.com/He makes some wooden boats for folks on the river that do extended trips with their camping gear and fishing equipment. Great boats that a lot of people are using.

Good Luck and wish I was going. Thanks for the tips! You are the first person I have talked to who has actually done this trip. I have read a few books, have bought all the camping gear but unfortunately did not like the kayak I had for the trip so I sold it this past winter. I do have a few questions. What kind of food did you take? I have the small MSR pan and pocket rocket, just not sure exactly what food to bring. I am guessing just the bagged camp food? Also did y'all bother trying to bring ice? If not did your water get too hot to drink? Also, what time of year did you go? Finally, based on your experience out there would you try this trip solo? I have no one interested in going so that was my plan for now. Thanks for the help. I think I am leaning towards the Ultimate 14.5. I'll just have to be smart about crossing open water like you said since it's not self bailing. I like the way it is set up and the storage capacity. Plus when I am not on long trips there is room for my 3yo son and my dog to sit inside.

We've got a Tarpon 160 here in Dallas to look over and measure if you'd like. They are very good touring/fishing boats. One of the faster sit on tops around......
