 what's the difference 40hp and 50hp evinrude?

Can anyone tell me the difference between the 40hp and 50hp Evinrude, 1996 year model? when I look up parts, it appears the parts are the same. I've tried google, and the only answer that sounded legit was reed displacement, but I'm not sure about this. The reason I'm asking, is because I'm going to have to rebuild my motor, threw a rod and busted crankcase. the parts are the same for 40/50hp. If possible, I'd like to make the modifications to improve while I'm at it. Also, this is motor is equipped with a jet drive. Thanks in advance.

Most of the time on Johnson or Evinrude it will be the size of the carb venturis.

yes 10hp my 40 and a 50 merc on my little boat are the same motor carbs and maybe a little porting are all that is different
