Rowlett Creek : they are starting to trickle in. Not really fly fishable yet. They are still holding around 66 in the timbered pocket upstream of the DART rail. There is a 16 ft dropp off they like to sit in before they move up in force. If the creek floods this week, if it rains hard enough, they will go upstream of Firewheel Bridge, and then they will be easy targets with the fly rods.

White Rock Creek: Merriman/Skillman -behind Tom Thumb. Hop out of the car ( 20 steps) and fish from Skillman Bridge up or downstream. VERY easy access here to lots of pockets. Half the time you are fishing on mowed grass. Lots of hangups, dont let the fly hit the bottom.

Hickory Creek: Park at Old Alton Bridge. Bring waders and fish upstream if the water allows you to. Been awhile since I was there, but the bank fisherman cant really fish the areas upstream due to steep banks. Knee deep water mostly with some deeper pockets. Downstream of the bridge gets a lot of deeper pockets with more crappie bites as well.

Denton Creek: I have not been paying much attention.

Elm Fork: Same as Above.

White Rock is almost in full swing spawn. Only lasts 2-3 weeks. And, this is the first year in 5 years, that we are catching 50-100 keeper sized fish per outing. Like today, Ultralite is out there right now catching them every cast or so. -Strip Fast

So a little help with the sandie run. I live in Rockwall, and fly fish, tie my own, etc. I've never done this sandie thing, but it seems a lot like steelhead fishing on coastal rivers. You need enough rain for the fish to migrate into the streams, but you also need the water to clear enough for them to see your fly. So how about any opportunities this weekend? From the report above and the weather since, Rowlett Creek isn't ready, but White Rock may be OK. Does that sound true provided there is no heavy rain before Saturday? I don't mind a trip to get acquainted with the area, but if the chances of catching fish are zip, that might not be the best first attempt at this.

Thanks.

Good info...thanks all. I'm new to fly fishing. What flies do sandies hit? Clousers? Buggers? Colors? Sizes?

Like I said above, I haven't done this yet, but based on scanning around this forum, I am tying white marabou bead chain eye minnow imitations with some silver flashabou and some green. Size 8 4X long streamer hooks. I think this would be the fly fishing equivalent of a "Hot Dog" jig. It doesn't feel right using leaded jig hooks on a fly rod...that seems better for ultralight spin fishing. Since I'll be using a sink tip fly line, I don't need that much weight to get the fly down.

First spring up here, looking to catch a few this year I hope. Do any of you fish the river flowing into granger lake? How do you do on the fly? Also what flies to you like the best?

Hey guys,

I'm interested in fishing for those sandies as they are coming up. I was wondering what the access to the creek is. I ride mountain bikes on the west side of the creek (Rowlett Park)so I'm familar with the area. Also does anyone put a canoe in and float this section?

Thanks,
Brent

Fished Denton Creek yesterday and caught my first white bass on the fly with a silver/shiner clouser. Saw a few decent stringers but it seemed a little early still.
