Been there but had 30 to 35 mph wind the whole trip. Fished conventional that trip.
The one thing that caught my attention on the Devils is the abundance of carp. There are 10 to 20#ers just about everywhere you go on that river. I was amazed at their numbers. Anyone who enjoys catching carp on the fly then that place is like heaven.

I fished the fly only, others used convetional gear, the catch rate was pretty equal.

i caught fish on everything, they are not that picky and with the clear water they will come a long ways to hit a fly.

Any advice you guys have for what flies yo would take on the trip? There are some very large bass in that river. Take flys that mimic large bait fish such as streamers and clousers and such. Crawfish flys would work too. Also, stock up on carp flys. Seriously. You will see them everywhere.

The best trip now is a 15 mile trip. I'm doing it in 2 nights here in early March. I'm a conventional fisherman and I've got a lot of experience on that river. Check out my youtube videos.... Devils River Bass Fishing 2011 http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SP2oK270JEUBrady

I'm headed there in March as well for my first trip (Thanks for the tips Brady)
Very Very cool videos! Look's like my kind of crowd!
My brother has done this trip twice and he mentioned the monster carp repeatedly. He only brought spin casters and had no idea about how to catch a carp on a fly rod.
We started reading Joel Hayes blog about carp on fly at Ray Roberts and got into that in a big way last summer. He was impressed with RR, but afterwards said the carp in the devil's are unlike anything he's seen. He's madder than heck he can't make this trip as the USMC has other plans for him.
He brought a mask and snorkel and dove some the deeper holes like the one at Dolan Falls. I'm going to do the same. Apparently there are some big cats in some of these holes.
The trip is getting closer and ever day I feel more and more like an 6 year old on Christmas eve.

I'm not in charge of planning, but the basic idea after my buddy talked to Gerald Biley is : 4 days and 3 nights, approx 7 miles a day putting in at Dolan and not sure where we are taking out, but a good ways before Amistad. You must get permits from TPW
