i think you do not change it until you have the worst backlash ever

I've got a reel I've been using for the last three years and it's already lost it's dark green color and has turned a very light shad of green but it is still as strong as ever.
I think the older braid gets it tends to break in kind of like an old pair of boots. Seems to cast better now with age so I have no intention of changing it anytime soon. Besides it can get expensive.

Just one more cast!

Braid can be impossible to get a backlash out!^ I would change it as the color starts to fade, or at least reverse it!

thanks for the response, I was thinking it had a long life, I'm just gonna keep rolling with it.

I do change my mono regularly though

your line fading has nothing to do with line strength. When your line fades, you can reverse it or take a marker to it.

As for impossible backlashes, braid likes to dig in on itself. It also has a courser surface, so realize this as you are working it out. Never put braid directly on the reel. Use a mono or fluro backing. This will prevent the braid from slipping nag save you from additional backlashes issues.

I use my braid for a year and then remove it off of the reel and turn it around and use the second half of the braid for that year which gives me two years. Then I put new braid on for the next two years.

After three years I need to reverse mine. Maybe a record six years on the same line?

Just one more cast!

I think it totally depends on how much action the line sees... of course if you only use it twice a year it will last forever...but if you are like me and fish every other day it needs to be changed quite regular...use your better judgement

I change mine when I don't have enough to make a decent cast anymore due to re-tying...

I've went 2 years before ever seeing any weakness. First time you hang up and instead of moving the boat it breaks, change it! lol

I have some that is eight years old. Been using it resently to dead stick in 40 ft of water. Unless u got your paycheck depending on your line then role with it. I store my rods in my house and not in the garage.

I usually just fish with it til the color fades then back reel it onto another reel and fish with it til the color fades then re-spool.

I reverse mine on the spool when it fades too much.
