Got the bug back from the shop. Thinking about running to choke canyon tomorrow. Heard it referred to today as "the dead sea".
What do you think? Is it worth a trip or not?
Last year this time I did OK there. Haven't heard anything good about it in a while though...

Canyon is a heck of alot closer and you might even catch more fish there. Sad isnt it, Choke-the new dead sea.

I'm surprised Choke isn't producing too much. Wonder why? For a test run I'd go to Canyon. On the flip side, why not run to Choke. Big cold front approaching in a couple of days. They might start turning n before the frontal passage.

Choke is not a "dead sea" its 20' low...you can't go there with pre-concieved notions about where you used to catch them! You have to treat it as a new body of water and re-learn the lake, the bass are still there they just aren't where you think they are!

Yeah so exactly when was the last time you were there and what did you catch? Since you're the Choke expert.

Grout Scout...you're usually not that snippy. What gives? What he's saying makes sense to me. I know we sure haven't been able to put many fish in the boat for about a year now, but it might be because we're still fishing the same general areas that produced so well when the water was up.

Just because he didn't give us his areas doesn't mean he's not on the fish. He sure isn't going to share with that kind of remark. Be nice now... smile

Great news on Choke Canyon!!!
.
.
.
The boat ran great and water stayed on the outside of the boat. Following my run in with a bridge at Fork, trust me this is a good thing. The weather was nice; not too windy, and there were not many boats on the water. I got to use my electronics a lot today and I became much more familiar and comfortable with them. I marked HUGE balls of baitfish and several large groups of fish. The fish seemed to be hanging out in mostly 11-22 feet of water. Water temps started out in the 57-58 degree range and when I left they were up to 65 in the skinny stuff.
Heck I even caught a few...

Now the bad news:
There is almost no grass this year, and the bite was SLOW. I threw deep cranks, square bills, spinners, jigs, c-rigged ubershad and t-rigged lizards. Some of this stuff in colors I don't use all that much, but I thought I'd give it a whirl.
I'm not sure I like the power pole at all. I'll use it more in the shallows at Falcon in just over a week. Hopefully I'll like it more then.

Taking everything into account; good, bad and ugly, it sure beats work! flag

Glad your boats running well and you caught some fish. It's like the saying you miss all the shots you don't take. I'm going to go fish any chance I get whether they are biting or not you can always learn something new.

Grout, need me to take you fishing? Heck, ill even tie you knots and bait your hook and hand you my rod when I get one on! Haha!

Seriously though people said the same thing about choke being dead last year and i had a bang up spring out there. sf510 is right on, you have to approach it like its a different lake. Choke has a ton of community holes and you have to be able to force yourself to get away from them and find new spots, especially as she gets smaller. And I've always said choke is a "spot" lake if you will. It ain't like falcon where you can find a ledge or point and sit and beat on them all day. On choke you have to have a 10-20 little spots, maybe a small patch of grass or rock no bigger than your boat, that you can run all day and piece together a good day.

At least that's my experience.

Snippy? loco So somebody comes on here and says he's got the solution to catching the fish at Choke and I can't ask him when the last time he was there was? Yeah BS on that one, never asked where he fishes and don't care but I still want to know the last time he was there. Every single person I have talked to or read from has said the lake is now sucking, notice there aren't any tournaments there? (Not talking bass clubs but more like bass champs, etc) If there was ever a time Choke should be good it is now, less pressure than its had in years. Here's a thought somewheres in the lake lives a 18 lb bass, you just have to think outside of the box to catch it; but in the mean time nobody can hardly even catch a limit of 2 pounders? You guys are nuts and I can sell you some ocean front property in Arizona...
