The brakes on your trailer are still surge brakes and a controller would not do anything. The reason that a 5 prong plug is required is so a small solinoid with a plunger activates when the back up lights come on and relieves the pressure on surge mechanism so you can back up. The same thing can be done manually by depressing and turning the dial on top of the surge brake. You can also relieve the brake by forcing a nickle in the slot on the side of the surge.

You do not need a brake controller. 5 way flat or wire a RV style plug on your boat trailer and you are golden.

Thanks, my instinct told me I didn't need this brake controller but they called their tech via the walkie and he said it needed one. The dang thing cost $350, they are going to wire this the way I need it and give me back the $350.

I appreciate you guys input.
John

I agree with the responses.. 5th wire is from your reverse lights on the tow vehicle, I've reworked 2 trucks to use the rv style round connector.. Much heavier duty... Then buy an rv to 5 flat adapter... It's easy to do yourself and surely doesn't cost 350$$

Don't know but, if your truck has a factory seven pin, you can buy a seven to five flat adapter. That's what I did.

That dont work either or atleast not on my ez loader and I have the 5 flat and them things will still lock up unless I put that stupid key in it the dumbest stuff I ever saw it really makes no sense why the hell they even built them like that.

FiShtick is correct. That is all you need to do and most trucks have a 7 pin trailer connection from the factory or you can buy one and install your self. Just plugs into wiring harness.

good post, my 2012 truck I just got came with a brake controller howerver can't use it since it will not work with my bass cat trailer. This post confirmed what I had thought in the first place although the dealer said it would work with my trailer

My advice to Puma Jim and C.A.S.T. is that if your dealer told you that a brake controller would work on a bass boat trailer, you need to find another dealer. They don't know what they are talking about.

Sounds like John got hosed, as long as the controller was not installed they will take it back.

If your truck does not have a 7 pin round connector on the back, you can go to almost any auto parts store and buy one that mounts to your bumper and is pre-wired to plug into your make/model of truck's wiring harness. Takes about 15 minutes to install and costs about $20. Some even have the 7 pin round, 5 pin flat, and 4 pin flat type connections all bundled into one unit.

Here's an example of a generic model.

Can anyone tell me if there is any issue with the following setup:

Ford F150 with an Integrated Brake Controller
Skeeter EZ Loader Trailer
5 pin flat to 7 pin round adaptor plug to go from trailer to truck

I believe the functionality of the Integrated Brake Controller won't work, but wanted to make sure otherwise this setup would be fine.

Anyone know?

I should have added that all the trailer lights work and I can back the trailer without any problem.

John all you need is to take that truck to nearest u-haul that does trailer wiring and they will wire your truck for a 5 pin flat. And get those fellers over @ ford to stick that "contraption they put on" where the sun don't shine. What that 5th pin does is sends a electronic pulse to a solenoid which releases the accuator(the part that pushes fluid to the calipers when the truck brakes are applied) so the fluid pressure is released from the calipers so the pressure on the pads free and the wheels turn. Probaly less then a $100 bucks out the door. Problem solved

Make sure your trailer doesn't actually have electric brakes first, it's an option through Ez-loader.

Mine has electric brakes...

I have two boats one with brakes and one without.

When I dont have the trailer with brakes connected the controller doesn't even come on.

There is a big difference in stopping at lower and higher settings.

Too high and it jerks you Into the windshield.
